Prac 2 - Day 1

This document discusses hypotheses in research. It provides examples of hypotheses for different research topics and variables. It explains that a hypothesis is an educated guess that can be tested and measured. Hypotheses should be testable, logical, related to the research problem, factually or theoretically based, and state a relationship between variables. The document provides activities for students to identify variables, write hypotheses, match hypotheses to sources, evaluate example hypotheses, and construct their own. It concludes with assignments for students to research null and alternative hypotheses as well as directional and non-directional hypotheses.

Catherine C. Teofilo
Activity #1:
TRUTH or BLUFF
Direction: Identify the following
examples of variables if it’s TRUTH
or BLUFF.
1.The effect of school building design on
student achievement.

Variable/s:
Dependent – Student achievement
Independent – Building design
2. The level of disaster preparedness
among secondary school students.

Variable/s:
Dependent – Secondary school student
Independent – Level of disaster
preparedness
3. The impact of using harvester on the
quarterly income of the farmers.

Variable/s:
Dependent – Using harvester
Independent – Income
Activity #2:
QUIBULOY GAME
The following are example of researches
and you need to give your
prediction (Hypotheses) on the result of the
research.
1.The effect of playing mobile legend on the
academic performance of senior high school
students.

Hypotheses:
____________________________________
____________________________________

2. The correlation of having a broken family into
teenage pregnancy cases.

Activity #3:
STOP, THINK &
LEARN
Direction: Answer the
following questions briefly.
What do you think will happen to the size
of a Gummy Bear if it was placed in water
overnight?
When the ice melts in a glass that is filled
to the brim with water, will the glass
overflow?

S NOTE
Research Hypothesis

 An educated guess or hunch that can be supported

by theory and previous research.
 A wise guess that is formulated and temporarily
adopted to explain the observed facts covered by
the study.
 A declarative statement that is tentative in nature.
 It must be tested, explained and measured.
Characteristics of good hypothesis.
 Testable
 Logical
 Directly related to the research problem
 Represents a single unit or subset of the problem
 Factually or theoretically based
 States a relationship between variables
 Sets limits of the study
 Stated in a form that can be accepted or rejected
Activity #4:
PERFECT MATCH
Direction: Match the following researches to
possible source of hypotheses. Column A are the
researches and the column B are the sources of
hypotheses.
Column A Column B

_____ 1. The effect of school building a. Personal experiences

design on student achievement. b. Literature
_____ 2. The correlation of having a broken c. Empirical data
family into teenage pregnancy cases. d. Environment
_____ 3. The impact of using harvester on the
quarterly income of the farmers.
_____ 4. The effectiveness of using Information
Communication Technology in teaching.
Activity #5:
GOOD OR BAD
Direction: Identify the following example of
hypotheses if it’s Good or Bad example
and example briefly what makes it good or bad
example.
1. Ice cream melts faster than ice.
2. Will fertilizer make my lawn grow
more?
3. Pepsi is better than coke.
4. Working hard, being nice and making
good choices will make me a better
student.

hypotheses based on your ongoing
research or previous research.
