Gradually Varied Flow: Prepared By: DR Charles Bong Hin Joo

This document discusses gradually varied flow, including: - The gradually varied flow equation used to model non-uniform flow profiles. - Different gradually varied flow profile types such as mild, steep, and adverse slopes. - The direct step method and standard step method for computing gradually varied flow profiles numerically. - An example problem demonstrating the application of the direct step method to calculate a gradually varied flow profile for a trapezoidal channel.

Example
A trapezoidal channel has a bed width B = 5 m, S0 = 0.0004, side slope
m = 2 horizontal : 1 vertical and n = 0.02. The normal depth of flow y0 =
3 m. if the channel empties into a pool at the downstream end and the
pool elevation is 1.25 m higher than the canal bed elevation at the
downstream end, calculate the GVF profile up to a depth of 2.96 m by
direct step method. Assume α = 1.0.
