Rotter's Locus of Control Scale: Psychological Testing Presentation

Rotter's Locus of Control Scale is a 29-item questionnaire that measures whether individuals have an internal or external locus of control. It determines if people believe they have control over events in their lives or if external forces like luck or other people control outcomes. People with an internal locus take responsibility for their actions and tend to be more successful, while those with an external locus believe fate controls their lives and are more likely to give up easily when facing setbacks. The scale is commonly used in psychology to study how locus of control relates to stress, health behaviors, and academic or sports performance.

Concept of LOCUS OF CONTROL
• LOCUS OF CONTROL is a term which refers to
the tendency for people to assume that they
either have control or do not have control
over events and consequences in their lives
(Rotter,1966)
• The concept was developed by Julian B. Rotter
in 1954, has become an important aspect of
personality.
Concept of LOCUS OF CONTROL
• It considers the tendency of people to believe
that control resides internally within them or
externally ,with others or the situation.
• Types of locus of control: 1. Internal
2. External
• Some people have wholly internal or external
locus of control , but many have some balance
of both views , varying with situation.
Rotter’s LoC Scale
• In 1966, Rotter published the internal-
external locus of control scale.
• Respondents are asked to choose between
pair of internal and external items relating to
everyday situations
• Locus of control has been one of the most
frequently researched personality variables in
social sciences.
Rotter’s LoC Scale
• Locus of control scale is a 29 items forced
choice questionnaire.
• Each item has A and B statements.
• This scale allow us to find out the way in
which certain important events in our society
affect different people.
• It is measure of personal belief.
• It has 6 filler items.(1,8,14,19,24 and 27)
Rotter’s LoC Scale
• Scoring
– Total possible score range – 0 to 23.
– High score = external locus of control
– Low score = internal locus of control
Rotter’s LoC Scale
• INTERNAL LOCUS OF CONTROL
– “A belief that outcome (positive or negative) are
brought about by our own behavior.”
– People with a high internal locus of believe in their
own ability to control themselves and influences
the world around them.
– They think their choices lead to success or failure.
Rotter’s LoC Scale
• What people with internal locus of control are like?
– They take responsibility for their success and failure.
– Less prone to anxiety and depression
– More health conscious
– Work hard to develop their knowledge, skills and
abilities.
– Have more participative management style.
– Good social adjustment and personal adjustment.
– Usually people in middle age tend to have the
highest internal locus of control.
Rotter’s LoC Scale
• EXTERNAL LOCUS OF CONTROL
– “A belief that outcomes (positive or negative) are
under the control of other people, fate or luck.”
– People with a high external locus of control
believe that control over events and what other
people do is outside them, and they personally
have little or no control over such things.
– They may even believe that others have control
over them and they can do nothing about it.
Rotter’s LoC Scale
• What people with external locus of control are like?
– They tend to be fatalistic
– They are more passive and accepting.
– They are more likely to attribute their success to luck
than their own efforts.
– Tend to be negative and give up more easily when
setbacks.
– Feels more helpless when faced with stress or illness
– Assume less responsibility for consequences of their
actions.
Rotter’s LoC Scale
• CLINICAL USE:
– Fields in which the measure of LoC has been widely use
are personality and social, educational, political, clinical
and health psychology.
– Health: Research finding suggest that people with high
external locus of control are more likely to be smokers
and that those with more internal locus of control have
greater chance of quitting.
– Stress: Individuals with high internal locus of control had
significantly less anxiety than individuals with high
external locus of control.
Rotter’s LoC Scale
• Sports and Academic performance:
– Locus of control had a significant impact on the
happiness of athletes. A positive attitude allows
them to better remain optimistic during time of
worse than normal performance.
– Locus of control has been shown to have a strong
correlation with academic achievement. Students
with more internal locus of control tend to have
higher grades than those students with higher
external locus of control.
