Lesson 5exploring The Concepts of The Normal Probability Distribution

The document discusses the normal probability distribution and its key characteristics. It explores constructing a normal curve and finding areas under the curve. The objectives are to illustrate a normal random variable's characteristics and construct a normal curve. Key points are that the standard normal distribution has a mean of 0 and standard deviation of 1, and the area under the normal curve is 1. Examples demonstrate finding specific areas under the normal curve using z-table values.

Exploring the

Concepts of the
Normal Probability
Distribution
Objectives:
• At the end of the session, the
learners should be able to:
1. Illustrate a normal random
variable and its characteristics
2. Construct a normal curve.
Review:
• Do the indicated task.
1. Convert 0.4772 to percent.
2. Convert 95% to decimal form.
3. Find the sum of 0.1017 and 0.3413
4. Find the difference between 0.5 and
0.1517
5. Find 0.1250 x 2.
Key Ideas:
• A normal distributed random variable having
mean (𝜇)=0 and standard deviation (𝜎)=1 is called
standard normal distribution. It is associated to a
normal curve called the standard normal curve.
• The area under the normal curve is 1.
• The standard normal curve extends indefinitely in
both directions.
Key Ideas:
• The standard normal curve is symmetric about
its center.
• The area of specific region under the curve can
be found in the table of Areas under the
Normal Curve
• Almost all the areas under the curve is
between z=-3 and z=3
Properties of a Normal Probability
Distribution
• 1. The normal probability distribution is bell-
shaped.
• 2. The curve is symmetric about its mean.
• 3. The mean is equal to the median and
also equal to the mode.
• 4. The spread of the curve depends on
the standard deviation of the distribution.
• 5. The tails of the curve flatten out
indefinitely along the horizontal axis;
always approaching the axis not never
touching it.
• The area under the curve is 1
68.26%

95.44%

99.74%
Examples:
• 1. Find the area under the curve between z=0 and
z=1.05
• 2. Find the area that corresponds to z=1
• 3. Find the area under the curve between z=0 and
z=2.23
• 4. Find the area under the curve between z=0 and
z=-2.4
• 5.Find the area that corresponds to z=-1.5
Use the z table to find the area that
corresponds to each of the following.
• 1. z=0.70 6. z=-2.32
• 2. z=-0.96 7. z=2.17
• 3. z=1.06 8. z=-2.19
• 4. z=-0.58 9. z=2.05
• 5. z=1.23 10. z=-2.99
Draw a normal curve and find the area
between the given.
• 1. z=0 and z=0.53 6. z=0 and z=1.70
• 2. z=0 and z=-0.70 7. z=0 and z=1.96
• 3. z=0 and z=0.96 8. z=0 and z=-2.96
• 4. z=0 and z=-0.96 9. z=0 and z=2.58
• 5. z=0 and z=-1.32 10. z=0 and z=-2.58
