Hydraulics

This document contains 11 problems related to calculating stresses, forces, and angles of rotation or twist in mechanical components subjected to torques or loads. The problems involve determining maximum shear stresses and angles of twist in solid and hollow circular shafts and bars. Other problems involve calculating bolt loads, stresses, and safe load values for brackets attached to columns with bolts or welds. Materials properties, load magnitudes and locations, component dimensions, and stress limits are provided.

SEC MODULE 05

1 If T = 4.6 kN-m, determine the

maximum shearing stress (MPa).

2 If T = 4.6 kN-m and the solid shaft

is replaced by a hallow shaft with
the same outside diameter and of
24-mm inside diameter.
Determine the maximum shearing
stress (MPa).

3 For part 2, determine the

maximum angle of rotation of the
shaft in degreses.
PROBLEM 2 – A hallow circular bar with outside diameter of 90 mm and
wall thickness of 5 mm is subjected to a torque of 5 kN-m. Use G = 78
GPa.

1 Calculate the maximum shearing stress (MPa) in the bar.

2 What is the polar moment if inertia of the bar in (106) mm4?

3 If the bar is 2.5 m long, what is the maximum angle of twist in degrees?
PROBLEM 3 – Each portion of the shafts
AB, BC and CD consists of a solid circular
rod. Length AB = BC = CD = 2 m

1 Determine the torsional reaction at D.

2 Determine the maximum torsional stress

in the shaft.

3 Determine the total angle of twist in

degrees.
PROBLEM 4 - The solid cylinders AB and BC are
bonded together at B and are attached to fixed
supports at A and C. Knowing that the modulus of
rigidity is 3.7 × 106 psi for aluminum and 5.6 × 106
psi for brass, determine the following;

1 Maximum shearing stress (ksi) in cylinder AB.

2 Maximum shearing stress (ksi) in cylinder BC.

PROBLEM 5 - A thin walled shaft has an equilateral triangle cross
section of average side length of 200 mm and thickness of 10
mm.

1 Determine the angle of twist in degrees for every meter length

of the shaft if a torque of 10 kN-m is applied. Use G = 70 Gpa

2 Determine the maximum shearing stress

PROBLEM 6 - The bracket shown
is bolted to each of the column
flanges using 8 20-mm diameter
A325 bolts. The load P = 380 kN
and e = 350 mm.

1 Compute he shear stress (MPa)

in each bolt if P acts at the
centroid of the bolt group.

2 Compute the force acting on the

critical bolt due to torsion.

3 Compute the stress (Mpa)

acting on the critical bolt .
PROBLEM 7 - For the bracket shown in
the figure, s = 60 mm. e = 200 mm,
bolt diameter = 25 mm, vertical load =
110 kN.

1 Compute the load (kN) of each bolt if

the vertical load is applied at A.

2 Compute the shear stress (MPa) in

each bolt if the vertical load is
applied at A.

3 Compute the load (kN) at critical bolt

if the vertical load is applied at B.
PROBLEM 8 - The bracket shown is
attached to a column with 3 19 mm bolts
arranged in an equilateral triangular
layout. A force is applied at a distance e =
500mm measured to the center of the
bolt group.

1 If P = 20 kN, compute the maximum

shear stress in the critical bolt in Mpa

2 If the maximum shearing stress in the

bolt is limited to 105 Mpa, determine
the maximum force P (kN) that can be
applied.
PROBLEM 9 – A plate is welded on the column
shown. L1 = 100 mm,
L2 = 150 mm, L3 = 60 mm, a = 50 mm. Force P is
inclined at an angle 60 degrees with the
horizontal.

1 If P = 120 kN acts on the centroid of the

weld group, compute the force acting on the
critical point of the weld per mm.

2 If P = 120 kN, compute the maximum force

acting on the critical point of the weld due
to torsion

3 If P = 120 kN, compute the maximum shear

stress of the weld per mm.

4 If the allowable shear stress of the weld is

124 Mpa per mm, compute the safe value of
P in kN.
PROBLEM 10 – A bracket is welded into a
steel column as shown.
Given:
a = 200 mm load P = 360 kN
b = 500 mm Allowable weld shear
stress, Fvw = 124 Mpa

1 Calculate the load in the weld (N/mm)

due to P
only when e = 0.

2 Calculate the maximum resultant load

(N/mm) when the load is applied at e =
200 mm.

3 If the maximum resultant load in the

weld is 750 N/mm, what is the required
weld thickness (mm)?
PROBLEM 11 – Refer to the figure STD-14.
The beam W410 × 67 kg/m with 9 mm web
thickness subjects the girder W530 × 109 kg/m with
12 mm web thickness to a shear load P (kN). 2L – 90
mm × 90 mm × 6 mm with 4 – 22 mm diameter bolts
frame the beam to the girder.

S1 = 40 mm
S2 = 40 mm
S3 = 80 mm
S4 = 110 mm
S5 = 40 mm
Steel strength and Allowable Stresses are as follows:
Yield Stress, Fy = 248 MPa
Bolt Shear Stress, Fv = 120 MPa
Bolt Bearing Stress, Fp = 480 MPa
