INTRODUCTION

• A trade union may be defined as an organization of


employees formed on a continuous basis for the
purpose of securing diverse range of benefits.
Definitions
Acc to trade union act, 1926, “trade union as any
combination, whether temporary or permanent,
formed primarily for the purpose of regulating the
relations b/w workmen & employer, b/w workmen
& workmen, b/w employer & employer.
Acc. to Edwin B. Flippo,” a trade union is an org. of
workers formed to promote, protect & improve
through collection action, the social, economic &
political interest of its members’.

Acc. to Dale Yoder, “a union is a continuing, long


term association of employees formed & maintained
for the specific purpose of advancing & protecting
the interest of members in their working
relationship”.
Objectives
1) Maintenance of full employment.
2) Greater assurance of fair treatment & equal justice.
3) Workers may achieve satisfactory personnel
policies.
4) Recognition & participation.
5) Miscellaneous services.
Functions
1) Collectives bargaining with the mgt. to settle terms
& condition of employment.
2) Advice the mgt on personnel policies & practices.
3) Taking up the individual & collective grievance of
the workers with the mgt.
4) Work for achieving better say of workers in the
mgt of affairs of the enterprise.
5) Education of their workers & their children.
6) To press the demands of the workers.
7) Welfare & recreational facilities for their
members.
Structure of trade union
A) Craft union – it is usually formed of workers
belonging to the same craft, occupation or
specialization no matter in what industry or trade
they happen to be employed.
For eg.- electricians, fitters, turners, carpenters.

• INDIAN PIOLOTS GUILD.
B) Industrial Union – An industrial organizes
workers on the basis of industry rather than a craft.
If the entire labour force of a cotton textile factory
decides to form a union consisting of workers of
different craft, the union is called an industrial
union.
Eg- RASHTRIYA MILL MAZDOOR SANGH
GIRNI KAMGAR UNION AT BOMBAY
C) General union – it embraces all workers in its fold
whatever their industry or craft may be.
Eg. JAMSHEDPUR LABOR UNION, whose
membership includes workers engaged in different
industries & craft of Jamshedpur.
Employers org in INDIA
The Indian national trade union congress (INTUC)
It was formed by the congress party & top congressman like
Nehru & Patel were associated with it.
Every union affiliation to INTUC has to submit its dispute to
arbitration after exhausting other means of settlement of
disputes.
United Trade Union Congres(UTUC)
It was formed on 30 april 1949 by the dissident socialist. It
functions mainly in Kerela & W.Bengal.
All India Trade Union Congress(AITUC)
This union serves as the longer forum of communist
party of India at present. It is considered as the 2 nd
largest union in India.

Hind Mazdoor Sabha(HMS)


It was formed in Dec 1951 in Calcutta by the socialists
who neither approved INTUC nor AITUC. The
HMS was organized with a view to keeping its
members free from any political interference.

• Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS)
• United Trade Union Congress (UTUC)
• National front of Indian trade unions (NFITU).
• Trade union c0-ordintion centre (TUCC).
• National labor organization (NLO).
CONCLUSION
• A trade union means an association of workers in
one or more occupations.
• An association carried on mainly for the purpose of
protecting & advancing the members economic
interests in connection with their daily work.
