What makes a counselor?

Is he a special person who chooses a

profession that would allow him to help
others?

Or being a counselor simply a job that

somebody has to do to earn a decent way of
living?
However one chooses to describe a counselor
or the counseling profession does not really
matter for what is important is what is in the
heart of a counselor.

His concern for another’s well-being is what he

believes defines him and sets his role as a
productive member of society.
Counseling is a reciprocal relationship where
both the counselor and the counselee/client
shape the process.

Counselors have great responsibility to ensure

that the process is beneficial to the client.

Personal qualities of counselors can enhance or

detract from the helping process and are as
essential as specific knowledge or skills.
1. Self-understanding and self awareness.
A good counselor has a good degree of
introspection, self-examination or self-
exploration.
He should be aware of his needs to be
able to be sensitive to the needs of others.
2. Psychologically Healthy
A counselor is not perfect, but a
psychologically healthy counselor should be
able to do more than what is expected of him
when the situation calls for it.

A healthy individual is NOT someone who

does not need help, but someone who knows
when to ask for it because he needs it.
3. Sensitivity
Since people are multi-cultural and
belongs to different races, gender, religions,
affiliations and capabilities, counselors should
be sensitive to all of these.
They should always consider that each
person is unique and that their uniqueness is
accepted and understood.
4. Being Open-minded
Put simply, the client is what he is because
of the system of beliefs accorded to him by his
culture which should not prejudice him.

The counselor should, therefore accept

the client just as he is.
5. Objectivity
This is the counselor’s ability to not be
emotionally involved with the client so as to
see accurately what is happening with client
and counseling relationship.
6. Competence
This refers to the counselor’s level of
confidence of his ability which he demonstrates
throughout counseling process.
This shows how a counselor is able to help
the client by instilling confidence and hope.
7. Trustworthiness
This should assure that whatever may
happen in counseling will be appropriately
handled by the counselor.

A counselor who is trustworthy, does not

make false promises nor does he give false
hope – he delivers what he promises to the
best of his ability.
