PROBLEM STATEMENT
This study is considered with the investigation of retrofitted beam-column connection
that is severely damaged by fire followed by an earthquake that will affects
structural stability , were using CFRP ropes as a material for retrofitting is crucial as
well as obtaining the best configuration for retrofitting for various failure modes is
essential.
These joints are studied due to its critical influence on the overall
behavior of RCC subjected for both heat & seismic loads .
However, there is a lack of data and test results still exists on such
connections when they are totally retrofitted with FRP reinforcement.
RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCE
Nevertheless, none of the available FRP codes or guidelines provides any
recommendations on retrofitting of BCC with FRP for both heat and cyclic load
combined damaged.
A new kind of CFRP reinforcement defined as CFRP rope with different configurations
will be used in this research for retrofitting.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE
This study is concerned with providing experimental and numerical data on the effects
of CFRP rope used for retrofitting a BCC for both fire and cyclic loading , where an
unrestrained body is subjected to temperature, it will expand as it is heated. The
change in temperature causes strains . Where the cyclic load will induced stresses
This study will focus on three-sub division objectives:
1- investigate different failure modes: joint shear failure , beam plastic hinge failure and a
beam plastic hinge with joint shear failure.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE
2- investigate the significance of the configuration of CFRP rope .
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE
3. Studying the behavior of a CFRP retrofitted interior
beam-column joint constructing a macro model using
the pushover analysis procedure in order to predict its
overall behavior, capacity and the modes of failure,
and comparing it with the experimental results
QUESTION OF THE STUDY
What is the level of efficiency of CFRP rope technique in BCC?
Which is the best configuration for CFFRP rope to use for retrofitting different modes
of failure?
RESEARCH DESIGN
In order to initiate the research, a 14 BCC test specimens shall
be considered. Given a time frame of six months the research
shall be done as follows:
Step (1)
A calibration will be made for the 14 BCC sample through
ABAQUS software, to insure an accurate modeling for test
samples that represent the laboratory test result, in order to
carry on with the research.
RESEARCH DESIGN
Step (2)
The specimens shall be equally divided into three groups:
-1st group: consist of two reference specimens were all the specimens shall have an
equal dimension of (250*150*1500)mm for beam and (150*150*1000)mm for
column and shall be damaged by a temperature starting from 1000 F, followed by a
cyclic load
- 2nd group: consist of 6 specimens designed to induce a beam plastic hinge failure
mechanism
- 3rd group: consist of 6 specimens designed to induce a joint shear failure
mechanism
RESEARCH DESIGN
Step (3)
Different configuration of CFRP rope will be applied to the specimens and grooves are
performed to the specimens before retrofitting it using CFRP rope.
Step (4)
All the experimental results shall be modeled in ABAQUS, were boundary conditions shall
be assigned in order to induce the equivalent failure modes that represents the
experimental specimens, Results will be compared to the analytical results from the
ABAQUS software.
