STORY
• Mahashay Dharmpal Gulati was born on 27 March 1923 in Sialkot, Pakistan. He belongs to a
middle-class Punjabi family in Pakistan. Dharmpal Gulati’s childhood was spent in Sialkot, where
his father had a shop of chili-spiced, which was named ‘Mahashian Di Hatti.’ His father was
known as ‘Deggi Mirch Wale‘ in that area because of his chilly spices. Dharmapala’s studies did
not seem to have any heart in mind, while his father wanted him to read a lot. But this thing, his
father had understood that Dharampal does not want to read further, As they passed the fourth
grade and in the year 1933, they left the middle of the 5th standard and sat down at home. With
his son abandoning his studies in such a way, his father was sad first, But later they decided to
teach them some business so that they could be able to stand at least on their feet.
• His father sent him to a carpenter to learn the work of wood, After learning for woodwork there
for 8 months, Dharampal stopped going there, Because they did not like carpentry. After that, he
also worked in the Soap Factory, Rice Factory, Fabric Factory But he could not stay in any work. At
the age of 15, he had worked more than 50. When Dharampal’s mind did not get anywhere, his
father put him in his ancestral business. At the age of 18, Dharmapala married Leelawanti . After
marriage, they realized their responsibility and took their resolve to leave their fun and took the
ancestral business seriously.
• Mahashay Dharmpal Gulati came to Amritsar from Sialkot, Pakistan after partition. Did not
mind here, After which came to delhi with elder brother and relatives. There was no
business. Those days Dharmapala’s pocket was only Rs.1500. From which he bought a horse
and Carriage of 650 rupees and thus he became a Tangewale.
• Dharmpal Gulati used to carry Carriage on the Qutub road of Delhi. This cycle continued for
almost two months and one day suddenly Dharmapal realized that it is difficult for him to run
a Carriage. He charged two aana (equivalent of 1/16th of a rupee today) from Connaught
Place to Karol Bagh.Forced into poverty, there were days Dharam Pal had no passengers. Some
even hurled abuses at him. Very soon, Dharam Pal realized that he was way more than this.
He sold the tonga, rented a shop, named it Mahashiyan Di Hatti (MDH) and started doing
what he knew best—selling spices. Years passed, hard work went up and misery started to
withdraw. The family didn’t have to worry about having three meals a day. The ‘spice maker
from Sialkot’ was now getting popular by the word of mouth. Local fame brought in more
business and more business brought in more money.
• But in addition to the work of pepper spices, he did not get any other work, so Dharmapala
decided to step on his old business. On 10 October 1948, they sold Carriage and bought a
piece of wood from the money received and made a small shop in Ajmal Khan Road, Karol
Bagh.

Career
• While in Pakistan, when he left his school, he learned many handicrafts such as Carpentry, Embroidery,
Painting, etc, but not to avail, later, his father got him into his spices shop. When he migrated to India, he
had ₹1500 in his pocket. Out of that money, he bought a Tanga (a horse-drawn carriage) worth ₹650 and
used to take passengers from Connaught Place to Karol Bagh. Later, he sold his Tanga as it was not his cup of
tea. He built a small shop in Karol Bagh in 1948, to restart his old family business of spices.
• The days that followed were not easy, but the family persevered. Dharampal drove a tonga (horse carriage)
for some time to make a living. When that did not yield favourable returns, he decided to re-enter his
father’s old spice trade and set up a small shop in Karol Bagh. He ground spices and sold them as ‘Pal di
mirch’ and Pal di haldi’, (Pal’s chilli and turmeric powder, respectively). As before, the sheer quality of the
products brought recognition.
• As word spread and finances improved, he was able to open another shop. By 1959, he had bought a plot to
establish his first factory to produce spices. The name, MDH, was retained.
• The packaged spices market in India was mostly unorganised then, with most housewives preferring to grind
their own spices at home. Even those who bought spices from outside insisted on the ingredients being
freshly ground, right in front of their eyes.
• To convince people to buy the packaged products was MDH’s next challenge

Chairman's Message I always believe in the philosophy "Give the World the best you can and the
best will come back to you with the grace of Almighty". It was my parents’
belief that everyone should get the right of education and access to
healthcare. With the legacy of honesty, hard work and polite humble approach
for everyone that I inherited from my beloved father Mahashay Chunnilal, I
started the journey of my life as a Tanga coach-van in Delhi after partition of
greater India and then soon re-started the old left over in Pakistan family
business of spices by grinding them with my own hands. Almighty ushered in
me with blessings of my parents and spread of my love to all, enough strength
not only taking my business of spices under the name MDH to a glorious
heights world over and myself as a king of spices, but also more than three
decades ago to simultaneously establish “Mahashay Chunnilal Charitable
Trust" in the name of my father. Under this trust, I have endeavored to fulfill
the cherished dream of my parents by establishing various educational,
medical and social institutions, of which this Mata Chanan Devi Hospital
setup in West Delhi is one of the most premier institutions in the service of
mankind in the name of my beloved mother Smt. Chanan Devi. The journey
of this medical institution Mata Chanan Devi Hospital was started with a
small eye hospital of ten beds at Arya Samaj Mandir, Subhash Nagar in 1975,
thereafter with initial setup of 20 beds in January, 1984 at C-1, Janakpuri,
continued with the construction of the hospital building setting up 210 beds
within few years spreading it into multi specialties and super-specialties
which are at par with any corporate hospital and soon the hospital is likely to
be of around 350 beds.
