Statics of Rigid Bodies: BS Mechanical Engineering - 2A

This document provides an overview of statics of rigid bodies. It discusses forces in the plane, including defining vectors, resolving forces into components, and determining the resultant of multiple forces. It also defines equilibrium of a particle as when the resultant of all forces acting on the particle is zero. The document uses examples to demonstrate how to determine the x and y components of forces and find the resultant force. The goal is for students to understand forces, vectors, force components, and equilibrium as relates to statics of rigid bodies.

Equilibrium of a Particle
We thus have the following definition: When the
resultant of all the forces acting on a particle is zero, the
particle is in equilibrium.
In the latter part of the seventeenth century, Sir Isaac
Newton formulated three fundamental laws upon which
the science of mechanics is based. The first of these laws
can be stated as follows:
If the resultant force acting on a particle is zero, the
particle will remain at rest (if originally at rest) or will
move with constant speed in a straight line (if originally in
motion). 20
