Chapter 4 Lesson 1 Carl Janzell N. Oropesa Prince Zydrick Salazar

This document contains a summary of three approaches to understanding human relationships with the environment: 1. The cosmo-centric approach views the natural state of the universe as something that should remain unchanged without human intervention like terraforming planets. 2. The theocentric approach sees the environment as a gift from a higher power like God that humans have a duty to care for. 3. The anthropocentric approach regards the environment as existing to serve human needs and make life more comfortable.

Chapter 4 Lesson 1

Presented by:
Carl Janzell N. Oropesa
Prince Zydrick Salazar
“You think you own whatever land you land on.
The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim.
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name.”

- Stephen Schwartz, “Colors of the Wind”
Analysis

 Personally, how do you regard the things in the
environment? As objects to make life more comfortable?
As means to fulfill your needs? As a gift?

 What does “observe prudence and frugality towards the

environment” mean to you?

 What is your opinion regarding the various

environmental movements you hear about? Do you think
their actions create impact on saving our environment?
There are 3 main approaches of
understanding our relationship
with the environment

1. Cosmo-centric approach

2. Theocentric approach

3. Anthropocentric approach
Cosmo-centric Approach

 Cosmo-centric is a belief that the natural state of our
universe should remain as it is, without human
attempts to terraform planets for human habitation.
Heraclitus' theory can be understood as a response
to the philosophy of his Ionian predecessors.

 Mainstream science does not yet acknowledge the

existence of qi (chi), the invisible life energy of the
universe that is said to flow through all things.
