Advanced Trimix: Technical Diving International

This document outlines the curriculum and expectations for an Advanced Trimix diving course. The course is designed to train divers to competently dive using trimix gas mixtures up to 100 meters deep. It will build on skills from previous courses, including accelerated decompression techniques and diving with multiple gas cylinders. Over the course of 6 days, students will complete academics, shallow water skills practice, and multiple deep trimix dives with staged decompression. The instructor expects students to demonstrate mastery of skills at a level beyond simply getting them "perfect" due to the increased risks of deep trimix diving. Superior judgement is emphasized over superior skills to minimize risks.

Course Philosophy

► TRAINING IS PURCHASED

► DIVE CERTIFICATION IS EARNED

Expected Skill Level
(From TDI standards)

► As a student progresses through increasingly

more advanced certification levels, the degree
of tolerance for “not getting a skill perfect”
becomes narrower.

►A candidate for advanced trimix should be

capable of showing decompression
procedures and trimix skills at
“demonstration” level.
Expected Skill Level
(From TDI standards)
► An instructor will ask students to show
mastery of skills for lower level classes one
skill at a time

 For example, a student demonstrates deploying a

lift bag and then may demonstrate buddy
breathing deco gas.

► Atthe higher levels, drills may simulate

multiple failures and students should be
capable of deploying a lift bag while buddy
breathing deco gas!
Reality Check

► Adv Trimix Diving

► It doesn’t get more risky or difficult

► Deco software is VERY untested

► “You have to be afraid to panic”

 Bill Stone – Caving pioneer
Reality Check

“The superior diver is the one that uses

superior judgement to avoid those situations
that require superior skill!”
