STAGES OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
AND DEVELOPMENTAL TASKS
1. THE PRENATAL PERIOD • This period is from conception to birth. During this period, all parts of the human body such as the internal organs, skeletal bones, flesh, etc. are formed. The inherited characteristics from the parents are also imparted to the child during this period. 2. THE PERIOD OF INFANCY OR BABYHOOD • This period is from birth to two years. • Physical and physiological behavior patterns begin to develop such as rolling, crawling, sitting, standing, walking, talking, laughing, taking solid food, controlling the elimination of wastes, learning sex differences, relating emotionally with parents and others, and the like. • The baby begins to learn what is right and wrong. • Oral stage • Use tantrums to call attention. • Baby teeth are out. 3. EARLY CHILDHOOD • Two to six years • Pre-school age • Exploratory and inquisitive period. • Asks too many questions • Child learns social relationships- mixes and plays with children of his age group. • Learns physical and manual skills. • Continues to learn what is right and wrong. • Can walk and run with steadiness, talk understandably, follow simple directions, and take a bath and dress by himself alone. LATE CHILDHOOD • Elementary school period (6-11yrs old) • The child learns some manual skills taught at home and in school • Begins to be interested in the opposite sex PUBERTY STAGE • Early high school (12-15 yrs old) • Physical and physiological changes in both sexes take place very fast. • Growth in height and weight is rapid EARLY ADOLESCENCE • Puberty stage to 17 yrs old • Late high school period • Develop their life ambitions and aspirations LATE ADOLESCENCE • 18yrs to 21 yrs old • Preparation for their professional or vocational careers and those out of schools • Development of intellectual and social skills continues EARLY ADULTHOOD • 21-40yrs old • Courtship, marriage, parenthood, employment • Start of productive years MIDDLE AGE • 40-65yrs old • Part of adulthood • Preparation for retirement • Physical and physiological functioning begin to decrease or deteriorate OLD AGE • Starts at 65yrs old • Period of retirement
