Lesson 4 Earth Subsystem

The document discusses the major subsystems that make up the Earth system. It describes the atmosphere as a thin gaseous layer composed primarily of nitrogen and oxygen. It notes that the lithosphere includes rocks and mantle, as well as the liquid outer core and solid inner core. Plate tectonics and mantle convection are important processes shaping the lithosphere. The biosphere encompasses all life forms on Earth across ecosystems. During photosynthesis, the biosphere absorbs CO2 and releases oxygen, acting as a CO2 sink. The hydrosphere includes water in oceans, ice, streams and lakes, which circulate heat and act as important CO2 sinks.

The Earth system is
essentially a closed
system.
It receives energy from the
sun and returns some of
this energy to space.

ATMOSPHERE

-thin gaseous layer that

envelopes the lithosphere.
Composed of 78% Nitrogen,
21% oxygen, 1% argon and
trace amounts of other gases
LITHOSPHERE

Includes the rocks of the

rocks and mantle, the metallic
liquid outer core, and the solid
metallic inner core.

Plate tectonics as an
important process shaping
the surface of the Earth.
The primary driving
mechanism is the Earth’s
internal heat, such as that in
mantle convection.
BIOSPHERE

Set of all life forms on Earth.

Covers all ecosystem;
From soil – rainforest
From mangroves – to coral
reefs
Plankton-rich ocean-deep sea

For the majority of life on Earth,
the base of the food chain
comprises photosynthetic
organisms.
During photosynthesis, CO2 is
sequestered from the
atmosphere while oxygen is
released as a by product.

Isa CO2 sink, and therefore,

an important part of the
hydrologic cycle
HYDROSPHERE

70% of the Earth is covered

with liquid water
(hydrosphere)and much of it
is in the form of ocean water
HYDROSPHERE

3% of Earth’s water is fresh

2/3 –form of ice
1/3-present in streams, lakes
and groundwater

Oceans are important sinks

for CO2 through direct
exchange with the
atmosphere and indirectly
through the weathering of
rocks
