Deciles and Percentiles

This document defines deciles, percentiles, and quantiles, and provides examples of calculating these values from data sets. Deciles and percentiles divide a data distribution into 10 or 100 equal parts, respectively. Quantiles split the data set into quarters. The document gives the formulas for calculating deciles, percentiles, and quantiles and provides examples of finding specific decile, percentile, and quantile values from sample test score and customer data sets.

PERCENTILES
■ PERCENTILES are the 99 score points which divide a
distribution into 100 equal parts., so that each part
represents the data set.
Example:
■ Find the 5th Decile or 𝐷5 , the 7th Decile or 𝐷7 , 70th
percentile or 𝑃70 , and 𝑃50 of the following test scores of a
random sample of 10 students:

36 43 41 29 16
24 34 21 19 29
Ex.: The owner of Noypi
Coffee shop recorded the Linear Interpolation is a
number of customers who form of interpolation
came into his café each which involves the
hour in a day. generation new values
8, 9, 5, 10, 11, 14, 17, 14, based on an existing set
10, 12 of values.
Find: 𝑃50 , 𝑃75 , 𝑄2 , 𝑄3 , 𝑃12 ,
𝐷8 using Linear
Interpolation
Example:

Find the 𝑷𝟒𝟔 , 𝑷𝟕𝟓 , 𝑷𝟔𝟎 , 𝑸𝟑 , 𝑫𝟔 for the data set
