Learning & Development

Learning involves acquiring knowledge and skills through experience that allows individuals to grow. The learning process involves stimulus, response, motivation, and reward. Key learning theories include reinforcement theory, which ties behavior change to responses to events; cognitive theory, which sees learning as absorbing information; experiential theory, which ties learning to experiences; and social learning theory, which emphasizes social interaction. Kolb and Honey and Mumford identified different learning styles, such as concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, active experimentation, activists, reflectors, theorists, and pragmatists.

MEANING
 Learning is concerned with how individuals acquire or
create knowledge and skills which enable them to
perform and grow in their current or future role.
 Learning leads to change, whether positive or negative
for the learner. It is an experience after which an
individual changes the way he or she conceived
something
 Learning can be more or less effectively undertaken,
and it could be more effective when it is paid conscious
attention
Learning Process
• Stimulus
• Response
• Motivation
• Reward
Learning Theories
• Reinforcement Theory - changes in behavior
take place as a result of an individual’s
response to events.
• Cognitive Theory - learning involves gaining
knowledge and understanding by absorbing
information in the form of principles, concepts
and facts and then internalizing it.
• Experiential Theory - Individuals learn from
their experiences.
• Social Learning Theory - Effective learning
requires social interaction
LEARNING STYLES
Kolb’s learning style inventory
He defined these stages as follows:
• Concrete experience – this can be planned or
accidental.
• Reflective observation – this involves actively
thinking about the experience and its significance.
• Abstract conceptualization – generalizing from
experience to develop various concepts.
• Active experimentation – testing the concepts or
ideas in new situations.
The Honey and Mumford learning styles
They identified the following four styles.
 Activists- who involve themselves fully without bias in
new experiences and revel in new challenges.
 Reflectors- who stand back and observe new
experiences from different angles.
 Theorists- who adapt and apply their observations in
the form of logical theories. They tend to be
perfectionists.
 Pragmatists- who are keen to try out new ideas,
approaches and concepts to see if they work.
