Denotation and Connotation •Denotations are the precise, literal definition of a word that might be found in a dictionary. Examples of Connotation • “House” versus “Home”: Both words refer to the structure in which a person lives, yet “home” connotes more warmth and comfort, whereas “house” sounds colder and more distant. •“Riots” versus “Protests” The difference between these two words is that “riots” connotes a violent gathering of people who are not necessarily in the right, while “protests” can have a more peaceful connotation and is often used when there is sympathy with the protesters. • “Cheap” versus “Affordable” While both words mean that something does not cost a lot, “cheap” can also connote something that it not well-made or of low value, while “affordable” can refer to a quality item or service that happens to be well-priced. •Chicken while this literally refers to an animal, it is a term used to describe someone who is a coward. •Retarded while this literally means slow or "slowed," it is a highly negative term for someone who has a mental handicap. •Addiction one of the literal definitions of "addicted" is to be "devoted" to something, but "addiction" has a negative connotation when used to describe someone's affinity for something. • Dog – suggests shamelessness or an ugly face. • Dove – suggests peace or gentility. • Home – suggests family, comfort, and security. • Politician – suggests negative connotation of wickedness and insincerity • Pushy – suggests someone is loud-mouthed and irritating. • Mom and Dad – when used instead of “mother and father” suggest loving parents 3 Types of Connotation Positive • A word whose connotation implies positive emotions and associations. For example, “the aroma of my grandmother’s cooking” produces a positive association, because the word “aroma” implies that the smell is pleasing and inviting. Negative • A word whose connotation implies negative emotions and associations. If we exchange the adjective “aroma” in the above sentence so that it now reads “the stench of my grandmother’s cooking,” the meaning changes completely. Though both “aroma” and “stench” mean smell, “stench” has a negative connotation, it means a bad smell or odor. Neutral • A word whose connotation is neither positive nor negative. For example, when speaking about a pet, the word “dog” has a neutral connotation; but, the word “mutt” has a negative connotation, and the word “purebred” has a positive connotation. Examples of Denotations •Butterfly an insect with two pairs of large wings that are covered with tiny scales, usually brightly colored, and typically held erect when at rest. Butterflies fly by day, have clubbed or dilated antennae, and usually feed on nectar. •Room space that can be occupied or where something can be done, especially viewed in terms of whether there is enough. •Tree a woody perennial plant, typically having a single stem or trunk growing to a considerable height and bearing lateral branches at some distance from the ground •Dove a stocky seed- or fruit-eating bird with a small head, short legs, and a cooing voice.
