Denotation and Connotation
•Connotations refer to the
wide array of positive and
negative associations that
most naturally carry them.
Denotation and Connotation
•Denotations are the
precise, literal definition
of a word that might be
found in a dictionary.
Examples of Connotation
• “House” versus “Home”:
Both words refer to the structure
in which a person lives, yet
“home” connotes more warmth
and comfort, whereas “house”
sounds colder and more distant.
•“Riots” versus “Protests”
The difference between these two
words is that “riots” connotes a
violent gathering of people who are
not necessarily in the right, while
“protests” can have a more peaceful
connotation and is often used when
there is sympathy with the protesters.
• “Cheap” versus “Affordable”
While both words mean that
something does not cost a lot,
“cheap” can also connote something
that it not well-made or of low value,
while “affordable” can refer to a
quality item or service that happens
to be well-priced.
•Chicken
while this literally refers to an
animal, it is a term used to
describe someone who is a
coward.
•Retarded
while this literally means slow
or "slowed," it is a highly
negative term for someone
who has a mental handicap.
•Addiction
one of the literal definitions of
"addicted" is to be "devoted" to
something, but "addiction" has a
negative connotation when used
to describe someone's affinity for
something.
• Dog – suggests shamelessness or an ugly face.
• Dove – suggests peace or gentility.
• Home – suggests family, comfort, and security.
• Politician – suggests negative connotation of
wickedness and insincerity
• Pushy – suggests someone is loud-mouthed
and irritating.
• Mom and Dad – when used instead of
“mother and father” suggest loving parents
3 Types of Connotation
Positive
• A word whose connotation implies
positive emotions and associations. For
example, “the aroma of my
grandmother’s cooking” produces a
positive association, because the word
“aroma” implies that the smell is pleasing
and inviting.
Negative
• A word whose connotation implies negative
emotions and associations. If we exchange
the adjective “aroma” in the above sentence
so that it now reads “the stench of my
grandmother’s cooking,” the meaning
changes completely. Though both “aroma”
and “stench” mean smell, “stench” has a
negative connotation, it means a bad smell
or odor.
Neutral
• A word whose connotation is neither
positive nor negative. For example, when
speaking about a pet, the word “dog” has
a neutral connotation; but, the word
“mutt” has a negative connotation, and
the word “purebred” has a positive
connotation.
Examples of Denotations
•Butterfly
an insect with two pairs of large wings
that are covered with tiny scales,
usually brightly colored, and typically
held erect when at rest. Butterflies fly
by day, have clubbed or dilated
antennae, and usually feed on nectar.
•Room
space that can be occupied or
where something can be done,
especially viewed in terms of
whether there is enough.
•Tree
a woody perennial plant, typically
having a single stem or trunk growing
to a considerable height and bearing
lateral branches at some distance
from the ground
•Dove
a stocky seed- or fruit-eating bird
with a small head, short legs, and a
cooing voice. Doves are generally
smaller and more delicate than
pigeons, but many kinds have been
given both names
•Flowers
the seed-bearing part of a plant,
consisting of reproductive organs
(stamens and carpals) that are
typically surrounded by a brightly
colored corolla (petals) and a
green calyx (sepals)
