Group 1. Chapter 1

The document discusses science, technology, and society (STS). It defines STS as referring to the co-dependent and co-influential relationship between technology and society. Scholars in the field study how scientific and technological innovations impact society. The document also discusses how science, technology, and their relationship to society have evolved over time and how they are important drivers of economic and social development.

Chapter 1
What are Science, Technology and
Society?
Introduction to SCIENCE,
TECHNOLOGY and
SOCIETY
Science, Technology
and Society (STS)
-refers to the endless cycle of co-
dependence, co-influence, co-production of
technology and society upon the other.
Scholar of STS tend to be motivated by
one or both of the following:

a. The discovery of relationships between

scientific and technological innovations and
society from new and revealing
perspectives, with the assumption that
science and technology are socially
embedded;
b. Concern over the direction and the risks of
science and technology.
Importance of

and
• Developments in science and technology are
fundamentally altering the way people live,
connect, communicate and transact, with profound
effects on economic development. To promote
tech advance, developing countries should invest
in quality education for youth, and continuous
skills training for workers and managers.
• Science and technology are key drivers to
development, because technological and scientific
revolutions underpin economic advances,
improvements in health systems, education and
infrastructure. https://ieet.org/index.php/IEET2/more/chetty20121003
Definition of SCIENCE
and Technology
Science encompasses the systematic
study of the structure and behavior of the
physical and natural world through
observation and experiment,
and technology is the application of
scientific knowledge for practical purposes.
https://www.oxfordreference.com/page/scienceandtech/science-and-technology
Technology is the relationship that
society has with its tools and crafts to what
extent society can control its environment. It
is the practical application of knowledge
especially in a particular area and capability
given by the practical application of
knowledge. (Mariam-Webster dictionary)
The origin of SCIENCE,
TECHNOLOGY and SOCIETY
The history of science and technology is a
field of history which examines how
humanity’s understanding of the natural
world (science) and ability to manipulate it
(technology) have changed over the
millennia. This field of history also studies
the cultural, economic and political impacts
of scientific innovation.
The meaning of SCIENCE and
TECHNOLOGY
The word TECHNOLOGY comes from two
Greek words TECHNE which means skill; craft;
trade science; artifice; cunning; trick; work of art
and logos, a word with many meanings but in
this case , discourse and reason . So words
ending in LOGY refer either to a discipline or
department of knowledge. The systematic
study of the subject or to people who speak
about a topic. The “O” in the middle of the
word is simply the combining vowel of all
declensions in Greek.
Misconception on the nature of
SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY
SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY are often
assumed to share a common methodology,
common symbol systems (language and
mathematics), and a common of
practitioners. There perceived
commonalities, science is generally
assumed to precede technology.
Distinct ways in SCIENCE and
TECHNOLOGY
In ordinary conversation, the term SCIENCE
seems to be used in three distinct ways
(Borgmann, 1984, p. 17):
a. Science as a human and social
enterprise,
b. Science as the body or well-established
laws and theories, and
c. Science in its applications.
TECHNOLOGY as Human
Activity
Technology is a human activity involved with
the making and using of material artifacts.
As a human activity, technology is situated
on the same level as art, politics, science,
economics, and the like, and not subsumed
under any other category.
Approaches to Natural World
Technology and natural science assume the
existence of an objective physical reality which
is independent of one’s perception of it. Bunge.
(1979) lists these assumptions as:
1. The world is composed of things;
2. Things get together in system;
3. All things, all facts, all processes, whether in
nature or in society, fit into objective stable
patterns (laws); [and that]
4. nothings comes out on nothing and nothing
goes over into nothingness” (pg. 270)
