LIMASAWA
ISLAND
Limasawa or also known as
Sarangani island ,an island
municipality in Southern
Leyte, is a small yet
flourishing town being the
site of the First Christian
Mass in the country and in
Asia.

It is known to be the
Jaime De Veyra stated that the first
mass was celebrated in Limasawa
not in Butuan.

Historian Pablo Pastells stating by

the footnote to Francisco Colin’s
Labor Evangelica that Magellan did
not go to Butuan but for Limasawa to
Cebu.
EVIDENCE FOR LIMASAWA
● The most complete and reliable account of the
Magellan expedition into Philippine shores in 1521 is
that Antonio Pigafetta which is deemed as the only
credible primary source of reports on the celebration
of the first Christian Mass on Philippine soil.
● Pigafetta’s Mazaua, the site of the first Christian Mass
held on Philippine soil, is an island lying off the
southwestern tip of leyte while Masao in Butuan City
located in a delta of the Agusan River along the coast
of Northern Mindanao. The position of Mazaua, as
plotted by Pigafetta, matched that of Limasawa.
● To the Gancayco Commision, “History is both a useful
and fascinating subject. As one travels through time,
one is bound to find it rich in stories.Every kind of
testimony is drawn upon from eyewitness accounts to
statistical tables. Personal records, such as diaries, can
certainly tell more than the official documents.
● In the authentic account of
Pigafetta, the port was not in
Butuan but an island named
Mazua (Masawa)
● Father Bernard studied all the
Pigafetta’s maps, which place in
Mazau off the southern tip of the
larger island of Leyte. A check
with the modern maps will show
that this jibes with Limasawa and
not Masao or Butuan.
● Republic Act No. 2733- An act to declare
the site in Magallanes, Limasawa Island in
the Province of Leyte, where the First Mass
in the Philippines was held as a National
Shrine, to provide for the preservations of
Historical Monuments and Landmarks
thereat, and for other purposes. - Enacted
without Executive approval, june 19, 1960.
● Hon. Mercado, Roger G.
-District representative Southern Leyte,
Lone District.
-House of representatives, Quezon City
-He made an act declaring March 31 as a
non-working holiday in the whole
province of Southern Leyte in
commemoration of the first mass in the
6
Philippines in Limasawa Island.
BUTUAN CITY
OR MASAO

Masao

● 1872: A monument to commemorate the site of

the first mass on the Philippines was erected in
Butuan
● 1953: The people in Butuan asked the Philippine
Historical Committee to rehabilitate the
monument or place a marker on the site.
● Zaide identified Masao in Butuan as the location
of the first mass. The basis Zaide’s claim is the
diary of Antonio Pigafetta, chronicle of
Magellan’s Voyage.
● Historian Pablo Pastells stating by footnote to
francisco Colin’s Labor Evangelica that Magellan
did not go to Butuan but from Limasawa to Cebu.

8
● According to BCHFI, it has gathered 28 new
pieces of scientific evidence and comparisons
between the two islands- Mazzaua and
Limasawa- to substantiate Butuan’s claim,
including the recovery of 10 Balahanghai boats
which were accidentally dug up near Masao River
in 1976. A shrine was built for the ancient boats
which were used by natives in Butuan for sea
travel even before the Spaniards came.
