Lesson Exponential Equation

This document discusses exponential equations with the same base. It defines exponential equations as equations involving exponential expressions where the variable is in the exponent, not the base. It outlines the steps to solve such equations by rewriting them so the bases are the same, setting the exponents equal to each other, and checking the solution. Examples are provided to illustrate solving equations by setting exponents equal and checking answers. Real-life applications to radioactive decay are also discussed.

Exponential Equation

(Same Base)

Dhon Angelo J. Damasig

Today’s Objectives

At the end of the lesson the learner should be able to:

▰ Define what is an Exponential Equation;
▰ Solve for the value of x involving exponential
equations with same base; and
▰ Cite real life application of exponential
equations.
2
What comes in your
mind if you see the
word
“EQUATION”
3
How about the word

“EXPONENT”

4
Examples that uses the concepts of
equation and exponents

72x+1 = 73x-2

32x-1 = 27x
53x-8 = 252x

5
“Exponential Equations are
equations that involves
exponential expressions”
𝒂∗ 𝒃 𝒙−𝒄 +𝒅
Remember: the
𝒂, 𝒄 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒅 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍 𝒏𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓𝒔 variable is in
the exponent
𝒃 > 𝟎 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒃 ≠ 𝟏 and not in the
base
6
Steps in solving Exponential Equations

1. Rewrite the Equation so that the BASES are

the same number.
a) If the base is a NUMBER, just break it down with a
factor tree.
b) If the base is a FRACTION, FIRST write as a whole
number by using negative exponents.
7
Steps in solving Exponential Equations

2. Once the BASES ARE EQUAL, you can set the

exponents equal to each other and solve for x.

3. (optional) CHECK your solution!

8
Example 1: 𝟕𝟐𝒙+𝟏 = 𝟕𝟑𝒙−𝟐
𝟕𝟐𝒙+𝟏 = 𝟕𝟑𝒙−𝟐
▰ Observe that 2x + 1 = 𝟑𝐱 − 2
the bases are −𝟑𝐱 2x + 1 = 𝟑𝐱 − 2 − 𝟑𝒙
the same, thus, −𝟏 2x − 3x + 𝟏 = −2 − 𝟏
we proceed to 2x − 3x = −2 − 1
Step 2 − −3
x=
−1 −1
𝐱=𝟑 9
Checking the Solution

𝟕𝟐𝒙+𝟏 = 𝟕𝟑𝒙−𝟐
▰ Substitute the
value of X in 𝟐 𝟑 +𝟏 𝟑 𝟑 −𝟐
the equation
𝟕 =𝟕
𝟕𝟔+𝟏 =𝟕 𝟗−𝟐
𝟕 𝟕
𝟕 =𝟕 
10
Now Try This!!

▰ Observe that
the bases are
the same, thus, 𝟒𝒙−𝟐 𝟑𝒙−𝟏
we proceed to 𝟐 =𝟐
Step 2
11
Let us check
your solution
Exercise 1: 𝟐𝟒𝒙−𝟐 = 𝟐𝟑𝒙−𝟏
𝟒𝒙−𝟐 𝟑𝒙−𝟏
▰ Observe that 𝟐 = 𝟐
the bases are 4x − 2 = 𝟑𝐱 − 1
the same, thus, −𝟑𝐱 4x − 2 = 𝟑𝐱 − 1 − 𝟑𝒙
we proceed to +𝟐 4x − 3x − 𝟐 = −1 + 𝟐
Step 2 4x − 3x = −1 + 2
𝐱=𝟏 13
Let us check
your answer
Checking the Solution

𝟐𝟒𝒙−𝟐 = 𝟐𝟑𝒙−𝟏
▰ Substitute the
value of X in 𝟒 𝟏 −𝟐 𝟑 𝟏 −𝟏
the equation
𝟐 =𝟐
𝟐𝟒−𝟐 =𝟐 𝟑−𝟏
𝟐
𝟐 =𝟐 𝟐
15
“ Some equations with different
bases can be expressed using
common base. for example,
𝟐𝒙−𝟏 𝒙
𝟑 = 𝟐𝟕
16
“ The base 27 can be written as 33
that’s why we got the new
equation,
𝟐𝒙−𝟏 𝟑 𝒙
𝟑 = 𝟑
17
Checking the Solution

▰ The bases are 𝟐𝒙 − 𝟏 = 𝟑𝒙

the same
therefore we
drop the bases
▰ What are we do now to
isolate the x variable in
the equation?
18
𝒙+𝟐 𝟏
Example 3: 𝟑 =
𝟐𝟕

▰ Observe that the 𝒙+𝟐

𝟏
base contains a
𝟑 =
𝟐𝟕
fraction, thus, 𝒙+𝟐 −𝟏
we follow
𝟑 = 𝟐𝟕
condition b 𝒙+𝟐 𝟑 −𝟏
𝟑 = 𝟑
19
𝒙+𝟐 𝟏
Example 3: 𝟑 =
𝟐𝟕

▰ The bases are 𝒙 + 𝟐 = 𝟑 −𝟏

the same 𝒙 + 𝟐 = −𝟑
Proceed to −𝟐 𝒙 + 𝟐 = −𝟑 − 𝟐
Step 2 𝒙 = −𝟑 − 𝟐
𝒙 = −𝟓
20
Now try to
check our
answer
Quick Note:

Exponential Equations can also be used

to model real-life situations, for example
in Science, to find the half-life of a
radioactive substance we use the
concept of exponential decay.
