Netwrk D

This document discusses several common network devices: Hubs connect devices on a network but are less sophisticated than switches. Switches filter data packets and only send each packet to the destination port, maintaining a table of addresses. Routers interconnect multiple networks and selectively route packets between them using address information. Gateways act as an entrance point between networks, such as connecting company networks to the Internet.

Network Devices

Network Devices
Computer network devices also known as
communication devices and they constitute a data
communication network.  These devices are routers,
switches, hubs, LAN cards, gateway, modems,
hardware firewall, CSU/DSU, ISDN terminals and
transceivers.  In an Ethernet or WAN network, the
data communication cannot be performed without
these devices.  Being an IT professional or a
network administrator, you must have the good
understanding of these devices.
HUB
HUB

A hub functions as the central connection

point of a network. It joins together the
workstations, printers, and servers on a
network, so they can communicate with
each other. Each hub has a number of ports
that connect it to the other devices via a
network cable.
SWITCH

A switch is more sophisticated than a hub, giving you

more options for network management, as well as
greater potential to expand. A switch filters the data
packets, and only sends the packet to the port which is
connected to the destination address of that packet. It
does this by keeping a table of each destination address
and its port. When the switch receives a packet, it reads
the destination address and then establishes a
connection between the source port and the destination
port. After the packet is sent, the connection is
terminated.
SWITCH
ROUTERS
ROUTER

A router is an electronic device that interconnects two or

more computer networks , and selectively
interchanges packets of data between them. Each data
packet contains address information that a router can use to
determine if the source and destination are on the same
network, or if the data packet must be transferred from one
network to another. Where multiple routers are used in a
large collection of interconnected networks, the routers
exchange information about target system addresses, so that
each router can build up a table showing the preferred paths
between any two systems on the interconnected networks.
GATEWAYS
GATEWAYS

gateway is a network point that acts as an entrance

to another network. On the Internet, a node or stopping
point can be either a gateway node or a host (end-point)
node. Both the computers of Internet users and the
computers that serve Pages to users are host nodes, while
the nodes that connect the networks in between are
gateways. For example, the computers that control traffic
between company networks or the computers used
by internet service providers (ISPs) to connect users to the
internet are gateway nodes.
BRIDGE
• A bridge is a way to connect
two Ethernet segments together in a protocol
independent way.
Packets are forwarded based on Ethernet
address, rather than IP address (like a router).
Since forwarding is done at Layer 2, all
protocols can go transparently through a
bridge.
