The Data Dictionary is the set of metadata used to
describe the data stored in the repository. The data
descriptions in a Data Dictionary is also called
metadata, i.e., data that describes other data.

A data dictionary is a collection of descriptions


of the data objects or items in a data model for
the benefit of programmers and others who need
to refer to them. A first step in analyzing
a system of objects with which users interact
is to identify each object and its relationship
to other objects.

multiple databases or files are located for distribution
over a network, or a repository can be a location that is
directly accessible to the user without having to travel
across a network.
