The document provides information about the Barauni Refinery owned by Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. It discusses the refinery's location, history, expansion over time, crude oil sources, and main product outputs. It then describes some of the key processing units at the refinery including atmospheric vacuum distillation units, MSQ units for upgrading petrol quality, and BXP units that include hydrogen generation, diesel hydro treating, residue fluidized catalytic cracking, and sulfur recovery.

INTRODUCTION TO BARAUNI REFINERY
• Situated 125 kilometres from Patna, it was built with an initial cost of Rs 49.40 crore. Barauni
Refinery was commissioned in 1964 with a refining capacity of 1 Million Metric Tonnes per
Annum (MMTPA).

• After the Barauni expansion project, it's capacity today is 6 MMTPA. Matching secondary
processing facilities such as Resid Fluidised Catalytic Cracker (RFCC), Diesel Hydro treating
(DHDT),Sulphur Recovery Unit (SRU) have been added.

• Barauni Refinery was initially designed to process low sulphur crude oil (sweet crude) of
Assam. After establishment of other refineries in the Northeast, Assam crude is unavailable
for Barauni .

• The refinery receives crude oil by pipeline from Paradip on the east coast via Haldia.
• The various products obtain from this refinery are:
• LPG,Kerosen,Diesel,Petrol,Light Naphtha, Coker etc
Plant Overview
The refinery has the following important units :
1. AVU-1,2,3
2. MSQ
3. BXP
4. COOKER
5. OM&S
Atmospheric vacuum distillation units
• Distillation is a method of separating the components of a
solution which depends upon the distribution of the
substance between gas and liquid phases. Distillation
exploits the vapour pressure of different components i.e.
relative volatility in creation of second phase by adding of
heat.
• Operation sequence of Avu:-
• Feed preheating
• Desalting
• Feed vaporisation
• Feed distillation
• Product cooling and storage
Process description:-
• Crude oil received from pipelines is pumped from tanks through heat
exchanger after exchanging heat with various hot streams the crude stream
attains a temperature of 120 to 130 degree celcius. After attaining temperature
the two crude flow combine together and enter in a desalted for separation
and removal of water and salt, inside the unit crude is pumped to desalter
through two parralel passes of pre-desalter heat exchanger train and heating is
done with various products streams from different columns .Both the passes
combine in a single header and enter the desalter from bottom through two
separators nozzles after splitting Then pre-topping column carries to the main
fractionator where the distillation is carried out.
• Products obtained:-
• LPG
• Heavy naphtha
• Kerosene
• Lgo&Hgo
• ATF
• Hvgo
• Lvgo
• Reduced oil
MSQU
• The prime purpose of this unit is to upgrade the quality of petrol.
• MSQ plant consists of three plants in series namely NHDT,ISOM and
PRIME G+.
ISOM UNIT
• In ISOM unit various reaction takes palace so that octane no. of petrol
enhanced.
• Feed: Light Naphtha
• Chemical Reaction:Benzene Hydrogenation
• Product:Mono branched C5 Paraffin and Multi branched C6 paraffin.
BXP UNITS
• Barauni Refinery, BXP Unit Consists of the following
Units:-
• HGU(Hydrogen Generation Unit)
• DHDTU(Diesel Hydro Treating unit)
• RFCCU(Residue Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit)
• SRU(Sulphur Recovery Unit)
HGU(Hydrogen Generation Unit)
Objective-To produce Purity of hydrogen(99.99%).
Feed:-
• SRN(straight run naphtha).
• LRU(off gas).
Product:-
• Pure Hydrogen.
Main Function:-
• Feed preheating and hydrogenation
• Feed desulphurisation and chlorination
• Performing
• Reforming
• Product recovery
• Heat recovery
• Steam system
• Fuel system
CONCLUSION

As a part of the course curriculum, I had undergone my summer training

programme at Indian Oil Corporation Limited, and would gladly say I was
highly honored and satisfied with my experience. Although I could not get
enough time to go through all the processes under operation plant, the training
I undertook helped me to deepen our knowledge regarding the application of
mass transfer, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics which are
the basics of chemical engineering. Starting with the “heart” of the refinery, I
get to know how physical separation of different products occur and various
process equipments and unit operations. I even got an insight about the
products usage, their storage and the various treatment techniques used for
purification.
