WHAT IS PSYCHOANALYSIS?
It is also based on the observation that individuals
are often unaware of the factors that determine
their emotions and behavior.
AS A TREATMENT
Psychoanalytic treatment examines how the
unconscious factors affect current relationships and
pattern of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

Psychoanalysis is plainly put a form of Therapy that


he popularized as a treatment for mental health
disorders
SIGMUND FREUD
Psychoanalysis = “Analysis of the Mind.”
He coined the word, “Psychoanalyse” in
1896.
Psyche (Latin) means “mental”
Analyse (German) means “examine”
Sigmund used psychische analyse in
1894.
AS A CRITICAL SOCIAL SCIENCE APPROACH
It has been used as a social science approach as early as
the twentieth century and it is sometimes considered as
the only school of psychology that paints a complete and
dynamic picture of personality.

It helps the researcher delve into the inner world of


individual and relate it to theories of subjectivity,
identity, and socialization
Psychoanalysis as a social science approach
liberates people by acquiring consciousness of the
unconscious. By making conscious of the unconscious,
people will understand why they behave in a
certain way or why they hold certain values and
beliefs.
Percy has just started a new relationship with Haley that he met
at school. While talking to her one afternoon, he accidentally calls
her by his ex-girlfriend's name.

Psychoanalysis began with Sigmund Freud when he
broadened his practice from medicine to psychiatry.

He was influenced by Joseph Breuer, a prominent


Viennese physician who believed that a client psychology
disorder can be helped by simply talking about his or her
problem, also known as the “Talking Cure.”

Freud experiences serious emotional problems
himself such as exaggerated fear of dying, he
engaged in extensive self-analysis by studying
his dreams.

Oedipus complex, the Electra complex, and


penis envy

Sigmund Freud published “The Interpretation of Dreams”,
made him accepted back in the community again.

His book caught the interest of Austrian psychotherapist


and founder of individual psychology Alfred Adler and
Swiss psychiatrist and founder of analytical psychology
Carl Jung. They become figures in Psychoanalytic.

But they disassociated themselves from Freud and
founded their own schools of psychology when they
realized that Freud overemphasized the role of
sexuality in personality development.

The id is the primitive and instinctual part of
the mind that contains sexual and aggressive
drives and hidden memories

It is referred to as the self-gratifying branch of the


personality.
EGO
The ego is 'that part of the id which has been
modified by the direct influence of the external
world.'

Deals with reality and it attempts to exert a sensible


influence over the id and superego.
SUPEREGO
Referred to as the discriminating branch of the
personality.

Concerned with moralistic issues deciding what is right or


wrong.
