Bnwas 2

The document discusses Bridge Navigation Watch Alarm Systems (BNWAS). It explains that BNWAS are required by SOLAS to monitor that the Officer On Watch is present on the bridge. It monitors bridge activity and detects if the officer becomes incapable of performing their duties, alerting others. It describes the key functions of BNWAS including operational modes, reset functions, and alarm sequences. It also provides specifications for typical BNWAS components like the main control panel, motion sensors, and reset switches.

 Harmonize the pro-active stance of certain flag
states
BNWAS – Why?
When? - Compliance Schedule
What Do you Need?......MSC 75/24/add.1
 Must monitor that the OOW is present on navigation bridge
 Series of warning lights and audible alarms must be
produced

 Tamper detection

 Single type cable installation for all detectors, re-

set buttons and alarms
BNWAS
What is BNWAS?
 Bridge Navigational Watch & Alarm System –
BNWAS is a monitoring and Alarm system which
notify other navigational officers or master of the
ship if the officer on watch (OOW) does not
responds or he/she is incapable of performing the
watch duties efficiently which can lead to
maritime accidents.

7
BNWAS
Why Ship Need BNWAS?
 There have been many incidents in the past wherein ship
has collided or grounded due to wrong decision or
inefficiency in taking decision at the correct time. If during
an emergency situation navigational officer is not capable
to handle that situation it can lead to devastating scenarios
 To avoid this BNWAS is installed on bridge which acts
similar to a dead man alarm in the engine room.

8
 The purpose of a BNWAS is to monitor bridge activity and
detect operator disability which could lead to accidents
 The system monitors the awareness of the OOW and
automatically alerts another qualified OOW or the
Master if for any reason the OOW becomes incapable of
performing his duties.
 bridge surveillance is achieved by series of indications and
alarms to alert first the OOW and, if no response, then to al
ert another qualified officer or the Captain
 the BNWAS may provide the OOW with a means of calling
for immediate assistance if required
 The BNWAS should be operational whenever the ship's
heading or track control system is engaged, unless
inhibited by the Captain.

I BNWAS - REGULATION

1. SOLAS REQUIREMENT

The requirements making it mandatory to have a ‘Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm

System (BNWAS) fitted to all passenger and cargo vessels can be found in the
amendments made to SOLAS Chapter V Resolution 19 that were adopted by the IMO
in the Resolution MSC 292 (86) on 5th June 2009.

2. BNWAS REGULATION

 IMO Resolution MSC 128 (75), MSC 81/23/2 & NAV 51/18
 IEC 62616 ‘Maritime Navigation and Radio Communication Equipment and System’
- Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System

3. REASON FOR USING BNWAS

 Increase in marine accidents

- Ships are larger in size, an increase in solo watch keeper
 Japanese & Danish flag ship – Positive effect such as a decrease in a ship accident

4. BNWAS PURPOSE

 The purpose of BNWAS (Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System) is to monitor bridge
activity and detect operator disability which could lead to marine accidents.

5. BNWAS APPLICATION DATE

Ships of 150 gross tonnage and upwards and passenger ships irrespective of size constructed
on or after July 01st
Passenger ships irrespective of size constructed on 1 st July 2011, not later that first survey
after 1st July 2011

Modes of Operation
Mode: AUTO
When Auto ON/OFF is selected AUTO ON or AUTO OFF will be displayed on the LCD,
the system will automatically switch ON and OFF dependent on an input for track
control to say if the vessel is in motion or not and will operate as per the parameters
previously loaded.
The track control signal will be a closed contact to inform the system the vessel is in
motion and open contact to inform the system the vessel is stationary.

Mode: ON
When ON is selected ON will be displayed on the LCD, the system will remain ON at all
times and will operate as per the parameters previously loaded.

Mode: OFF
The system operation is inhibited except the officer call function.

Mode: PORT SECURITY

The system functions as a standard intruder alarm. Master level Password is
utilised to initiate entry and exit periods. The EXIT / ENTRY periods are
defined in minutes.
Port Security
• Operates when ship is in port
• Requires the PIR sensors
• Detects when unauthorised persons on bridge
• Captain sets exit/entry time before system
operates
• Aim – to prevent unauthorised access to the
bridge
