Relation and Function

1. The document discusses representing real-life situations using functions, including piecewise functions. It provides examples of costs, areas, and amounts that can be represented as mathematical functions of various variables. 2. Students are asked to work in groups to represent given real-life situations using functions and present their work to the class. 3. The activity aims to help students differentiate between relations and functions, and appreciate how functions can model real-world scenarios.

Relation

and
Function
Objectives
1.Define, identify and differentiate
function and relation;
2.Represent real-life situations using
functions including piece-wise
function;
3.Appreciate representing real-life
situations using functions.
Questions:

1.What are the different

functions that you had
studied during your JHS?
2.Give real life examples of
relation and function.
Piece-wise Function
- is a function defined by two or
more formulas on different parts of
its domain.

−𝑥, 𝑥<0
𝑓 𝑥 =ቊ
𝑥, 𝑥≥0
Activity
Analysis
Questions:

1.How did you find the activity?

2.How did you come up with your
answers?
3.How will you differentiate
relation and function?
Functions as
Representations
of Real-life
Situations
Example 1:

1.Give a function C that can

represent the cost of buying x
meals, if one meal costs P40.00.

Answer: C(x) = 40x

Example 2:

1.One hundred meters of fencing is available to enclose a

rectangular area next to a river. Give a function A that
can represent the area that can be enclosed, in terms
of x.

Answer: A(x) = 50x – 0.5x2

Example 3:

A merchant sells rice at P45.00 a kilo. If,

however, a buyer buys more than 150 kilos
of rice, the merchant gives a 10%
discount. If x represents the number of
kilos of rice purchased, express the
amount to be paid by f(x).

45𝑥 𝑖𝑓 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 150
Answer: f 𝑥 = ቊ
40.50𝑥 + 675 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 > 150
Example 4:

1. A user is charged P300.00 monthly for a

particular mobile plan, which includes 100 free
text messages. Messages in excess of 100 are
charged P1.00 each. Represent the amount a
consumer pays each month as a function of the
number of messages m sent in a month.

300 𝑖𝑓 0 < 𝑚 ≤ 100

Answer: 𝑡 𝑚 = ቊ
200 + 𝑚 𝑖𝑓 𝑚 > 100

Evaluation:
1. A copy shop charges $0.15 per photocopy for
orders of 20 or fewer photocopies, $0.12 per
photocopy for orders of 50 or fewer but more than
20 photocopies, and $0.10 per photocopy for
orders of more than 50 photocopies. Which
function best represents the cost C in dollars
for x number of photocopies?
𝟎. 𝟏𝟓𝒙 𝒊𝒇 𝟎 < 𝒙 ≤ 𝟐𝟎
Answer: 𝑪 𝒙 = ൞𝟎. 𝟏𝟐𝒙 𝒊𝒇 𝟐𝟎 < 𝒙 ≤ 𝟓𝟎
𝟎. 𝟏𝟎𝒙 𝒊𝒇 𝒙 > 𝟓𝟎
Assignment:
1.I buy a printer for $100 and ink cartridges
cost $25 each. What is the relationship
between ink cartridges x and total cost C?

2.The parking lot charges $3 per hour for

the initial 3 hours and a maximum of $10
per day. Represent the charges C in terms
of x hours.
