Active Magnetic Bearings (AMB) : Seminar On

This document provides an overview of active magnetic bearings (AMB). It discusses how AMBs support moving machinery without physical contact using magnetic levitation. The key components of an AMB system are the magnetic bearing, position sensor, controller, and host computer. AMBs have advantages like low wear and friction, but also have complexity and high initial costs. Applications discussed include uses in turbines, maglev trains, and reducing noise and vibration.

INTRODUCTION
• A magnetic bearing is a bearing which
supports a load using magnetic levitation.
• Magnetic bearings support moving machinery
without physical contact, for example, they
can levitate a rotating shaft and permit
relative motion without friction or wear.
BASIC OPERATION
SYSTEM COMPONENTS

• MAGNETIC BEARING
• POSITION SENSOR
• CONTROLLER
• HOST COMPUTER
ADVANTAGES OF AMB

• Elimination of leaks, flash, contaminants

• Direct-drive, direct-coupled machines (no gearbox)
• Accurate, dynamic control of rotor position & stability
• Absence of mechanical contact between shaft and
bearing.
• Very low wear rate.
• Low power dissipation in the bearing.
• Absence of lubricants.
• High speeds of rotation.
• Unbalance compensation.
• Low vibration.
DISADVANTAGES OF AMB

 complexity
 high initial cost
APPLICATIONS

École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland

- eliminates complicated lubrication system
- high temperature resistance
- reduction of pollution
- vibrations, noise, stresses avoided
- improved monitoring (unbalances, defects, etc.)

Status: suboptimal design

 overheating at load (> 550°C)
 increase life span
 optimize fill factor
 reduce cost
 simplify manufacturing
APPLICATIONS

New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) –

Japan‘s Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI)
• T=½Jw2  speed has larger influence than mass (better energy density)
• fiber-reinforced plastics for high strength
• fracture into small pieces upon failure  above ground
• combination of superconductor and permanent magnet bearings (hsys = 84%)
APPLICATIONS

Current Development Goals (NEDO)

• increase load force
• reduce amount load force decrease with time (magnetic flux creep)
• reduce rotational loss
• increase size of bearings for larger systems
APPLICATIONS

Maglev in Shanghai
- complete in 2004
- airport to financial district (30 km)
- world‘s fastest maglev in commercial operation (501 km/h)
- service speed of 430 km/h

APPLICATIONS

Maglev = Magnetic Levitation

• 150 mm levitation over guideway track
 undisturbed from small obstacles (snow, debris, etc.)
• typical ave. speed of 350 km/h (max 500 km/h)
 what if? Paris-Moscow in 7 hr 10 min (2495 km)!
• stator: track, rotor: magnets on train
