Types of Pattern

This document discusses different types of patterns used in casting based on casting requirements. There are 5 main types: single or loose patterns which are a single copy without joints; split patterns which have two parts for intricate shapes; gated patterns which incorporate the gating system for mass production; match plate patterns which mount the cope and drag portions on a plate for small, high volume castings; and cope and drag patterns which have separate cope and drag portions on different plates for large castings.

PATTERN MAKING

TYPES OF PATTERNS

CLASSIFIED DEPENDING ON THE CASTING REQUIREMENTS AS

1) SINGLE OR LOOSE PATTERN

2) SPLIT PATTERN

3) GATED PATTERN

4) MATCH PLATE PATTERN

5) COPE AND DRAG PATTERN

1
TYPES OF PATTERNS
SINGLE OR LOOSE PATTERN

SINGLE COPY OF THE CASTING.

SIMPLEST OF ALL PATTERNS.- NO JOINTS., NO

PARTINGS.

IT INCORPORATES THE ALLOWANCES AND

CORE PRINTS.

MADE OF WOOD , METAL, PLASTER, PLASTICS,

WAX.

NORMALLY USED FOR HAND MOULDING.

2
SINGLE OR LOOSE PATTERN

3
SPLIT PATTERN

USED WHEN DESIGN OF CASTING OFFERS

DIFFICULTY IN MAKING OF MOULD AND
WITHDRAWL OF PATTERN.

MOULDS OF INTRICATE SHAPE CAN BE

FORMED.

ARE IN TWO PARTS- ONE TO BE PLACED IN

COPE AND THE OTHER IN DRAG OF FLASK.

WITHDRAWAL PINS HOLD THE TWO PARTS

TOGETHER.

THE SURFACE FORMED AT THE LINE OF

SEPARATION OF THE TWO PARTS, USUALLY AT
THE CENTER LINE OF THE PATTERN, IS CALLED
PARTING LINE.

GATED PATTERN

FOR MASS PRODUCTION OF CASTINGS.

MULTICAVITY MOULD.

GATING SYSTEM IS A PART OF THE PATTERN.

MORE RAPID PROCESS.

7
GATED PATTERN

8
MATCH PLATE PATTERN

FOR MAKING LARGE QUANTITIES OF SMALL

CASTINGS.

THE COPE AND DRAG PORTIONS ARE

MOUNTED ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF A
WOODEN PLATE CONFIRMING TO THE
PARTING LINE.

MATCH PLATES ARE ALSO INTEGRALLY CAST-

THE PATTERN AND THE PLATE ARE CAST AS
ONE PIECE IN SAND OR PLASTER MOULDS.

GATING SYSTEMS ATTACHED.

USED FOR MACHINE MOULDING.

HIGH PRODUCTION RATE.

HIGH DIMENSIONAL ACCURACY.

9
INCREASED WEIGHT. DIFFICULT TO HANDLE.
MATCH PLATE PATTERN
COPE AND DRAG PATTERN

THE COPE AND DRAG PORTIONS OF THE

PATTERN ARE MOUNTED SEPARATELY ON
DIFFERENT PLATES.

CAN MAKE LARGE CASTINGS.

INCREASED PRODUCTION RATE.

COSTLY.

ACCURATE ALIGNMENT OF THE TWO MOULD

HALVES.
