Introduction to Info. Resources and Reference II
WHAT IS MECHANICAL ENGINEERING?
• discipline that applies engineering, physics, engineering mathematics, and
materials science principles to design, analyze, manufacture, and maintain
mechanical systems.
• one of the oldest and broadest of the engineering disciplines.
• mechanical engineering field requires an understanding of core areas
including mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, materials science,
structural analysis, and electricity.
• mechanical engineers use tools such as computer-aided design (CAD),
computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), and product life cycle management
to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and
machinery, heating and cooling systems, transport systems, aircraft,
watercraft, robotics, medical devices, weapons, and others.
• involves the design, production, and operation of machinery.
History
Centennial History of the American Society of
mechanical Engineering. 1890-1980 Sinelair, Bruce.
New York: American Society of Mechanical
Engineers. 1980. 256 p. ISBN: 0656698428
This is a history of the ASME the sphere of social economy and
technology. It deals with how the society serve its members, and the
public, as well as the standards it sets. This is a major contribution to
the history of engineering.
ABSTRACT AND INDEXES
Applied Mechanics Reviews. New York: American
Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1948. Monthly.
ISSN: 00036900.
• This title covers reviews of advances in a broad range of the
mechanical engineering sciences. It is an excellent source. The
arrangement is by subject, with abstracts, mostly short within the
subject area. Some abstracts for monographs may be longer. A classic
source. And for good reason-- it works!
Fluid Power Abstracts. Cranfield, England:
BHRA Fluid Engineering. 1960, Monthly.
• This is a critical source for both technical and trade information in the
automotive engineering field. It is a necessary tool for most research
collections.
Mechanical Engineering Abstracts. London:
Institution of Mechanical Engineers, 1973-.
Monthly, ISSN: 10637311
• One original intent of this work was speed of publication. The listing
of papers is done in a classified arrangement, which is sometimes a
drawback. The classification is unwidely in some new areas of
interest. The coverage is worldwide for mechanical engineering. This
is a very good source for any research collection.
DICTIONARIES
Dictionary of Water and Sewage Engineering. 4rth
Edition. Meinck, Fritz and Helmur Mohle. Munich,
Germany: French and European Press, 1993. 661p.
ISBN: 0828809615
• Very much a translation dictionary, this work contains no definitions,
but it does an admirable job of matching German terms in English,
French, and Italian. There is an index that is arranged by English,
French, and Italian terms. It is highly recommended for research
collections.
Encyclopedic Dictionary of Gears and Gearing.
South, David W., and Richard H. Ewert. New York:
McGraw-Hill, 1995. 414p. ISBN: 0070597960
• Designed as an on-the-job reference, tis dictionary includes
fundamental concepts through more advance design concepts. There
are good illustrations throughout the work. This nicely done
dictionary will be used well in the specialized collections or in some
academic collections.
Dictionary of Mechanical Engineering. 4rth
Edition. Nayler, G. H. F. Warrendale, PA: Society of
Automotive Engineers, 1996. 454p. ISBN:
1560917547
• Approximately 6,000 of the most commonly used terms in the
literature of mechanics have been chosen for precise definition. The
dictionary is amply illustrated. There is a slight British emphasis to the
work. Terms have been expanded to include both mechanical
engineering design and manufacture, typified by the field of robotics.
This is a classic dictionary in this area that just keeps getting better
each edition.
HANDBOOKS
ASME Handbook. American Society of Mechanical
Engineers, New York: McGraw-Hill, 1983. 4v.
• A standard handbook in mechanical engineering. As with most
standards, the reason for its popularity is that it works. It covers
metals engineering design, engineering tables, metals engineering
process, and the properties of metals. This is an excellent source of
highly technical information.
Flow Measurement Engineering Handbook. 3rd
Edition. Miller, R. W. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1995.
723p. ISBN: 0070423660
• Well-written and well-organized handbook of flow measuring devices,
covering equations, analysis techniques, and standards. It most
helpful to the practicing engineer interested in a working tool and
reference guide to aid in the selection, design, and application of flow
meters and flow measurement systems.
HVAC Design Data Sourcebook. Parmley, Robert
O., ed. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1994. 489p. ISBN:
0070485720
• This is a handy guide that will find excellent use by people who design
or are studying HVAC systems. It will not replace the ASHRAE
Handbook, but it will act as a desk set in a place of the larger work. It
will be a first stop for information prior to other, more complete
handbooks. It is highly recommended for vocational schools, public
schools, public libraries, and community college professional
collections of architects and mechanical engineers.
DIRECTORIES
Directory of Industrial Heat-processing and
Combustion Equipment. New York: Industrial
Heating Equipment Association, 1964, Biennial. ISSN:
07380887
• Directory of processing and combustion equipment manufactured by
37 companies, using with an expanded list of manufacturers. followed
by a section of types of equipment, classified by mode of production.
Directory of Foreign Manufacturers in the United
States. 5th Edition. Arpan, Jeffrey S. and David A.
Ricks. Atlanta, GA: Georgia State University,
Business Publications, 1990. 419 p. ISBN:
0884062554
• This directory lists 3,400 firms alphabetically and indexes them by
parent company. It also contains a list of foreign-owned domestic
businesses. It can be a useful tool given the spread of multinational
corporations.
