ADMINISTRATIVE TIPS
o Become familiar with your environment:
• Get to know your campus - before your first day attend orientation and familiarise
yourself with the campus.
• Determine how you will get to and from classes - if using public transport then look up
bus/train timetables, use student ID to get a discount.
• Be familiar with the university’s websites - library, database and online discussion boards.
• Obtain your id card - this is needed to sit exams and can be used for student discounts.
GENERAL TIPS
o Preparation and discipline are vital to success:
• Study is like a full time job - learning takes time, give it the respect it is due.
• Plan ahead - set out on a wall planner, Google calendar (or somewhere else useful) all
the important assignment and exam dates. Include the % weighting so that you can see
where to allocate time. Refer to this planner often.
• Set aside specific time to study each subject - use daily and weekly goals to achieve this.
• Build healthy networks with lecturers and peers - these people can provide support whilst
studying and as you transition to work, plus it will make university more fun.
WELLBEING TIPS
o You are more than just a university student:
• Sleep well - get good quality sleep, aim for 6-8 hours a night.
• Drink lots of water - a good bench mark is to aim to drink 2L a day.
• Eat right - eat nutrient rich food.
• Exercise - improves mental and physical health.
• Take breaks - find hobbies outside of studies but make sure they do not take up too much
time.
STUDY TIPS

o You are at university to gain knowledge and skills:


• Figure out how you learn best - there are many techniques and you need to utilise them to
learn effectively and efficiently.
• Attend lectures - there is a positive correlation between exam scores all lecture
attendance. Listen actively.
• Do pre-readings - lectures will be more useful when you read beforehand.
• Revise - after lectures revisit content and fill in knowledge gaps. The more time you spend
with a subject the better you will know it.
• Start early - this will give you time to obtain feedback and revise effectively.
SUMMARY: 5 UNIVERSITY ‘DON’TS’
1. Do not procrastinate - break study up onto manageable portions as opposed to
huge sections.
2. Do not try to write down everything in a lecture - note down key points and new
information.
3. Do not neglect your well being - sleep, drink water, eat right take breaks and
budget smartly.
4. Do not suffer in silence - if you are feeling overwhelmed let someone know. A peer
a lecturer or another professional.
5. Do not forget the examination rules - take your ID with you, turn off your phone
and carry a clear water bottle.
