Rainfall Estimation

Rainfall is measured using devices called raingauges. There are two types: non-recording raingauges that don't show variation over time, and recording raingauges that produce continuous data. Proper installation of raingauges requires a level, open area at least 30m2 surrounded by fencing, and the raingauge must be at least 30m from any tall obstructions to ensure accurate rainfall measurements.

RAINGAUGES
THE IDEAL LOCATION OF RAINGAUGES 21/09/2018

LECTURER : DR BALQIS
COURSE : SURFACE HYDROLOGY
GROUP :THREE
Ideal location of raingauges

 precipitation is measured by using devices or instruments called

as “raingauges” ( also known as obrometers or hyetometers).

 There are two types of raingauges

1) None-recording raingauges :
these types of raingauge don’t give you variation of rainfall
with time
that’s why named none-recording raingauges
a) Symons raingauge ( etc).
• 2) Recording raingauges:
These raingauges produces continuous rainfall data variation
against time. Using this data rainfall intensity vs time a curve
can be ploted
Raingauge…..
 The place where raingauge is installed and rainfall measurements is
carried out is known as “rainfall station”

A raingauge essentially consist of a cylindrical vessel assembly which is

kept in an open area to collect rain water, several factors must be taken
account during installation of raingauges.

Following are the requirements for installing a raingauge

A) A level ground open to the sky is required

B) Raingauge must be surrounded in open fenced area whose

size is at least 5.5m by 5.5m approximately 30m2
IDEAL LOCATION……..
………………

Raingauge must be kept at a distance of at least 30 m or twice

the height of the nearest tall building or obstruction.
