Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) delivers video and audio content over an Internet connection. It allows users to watch live TV broadcasts and on-demand videos on devices like computers, televisions through set-top boxes, and mobile phones. IPTV uses Internet protocols like IGMP for channel changing and RTSP for video on demand. It provides advantages like digital broadcast quality, remote management, and easy scalability over traditional TV services. However, issues include potential low bandwidth affecting quality and expensive set-top boxes required for each TV. Future developments may include location-based services and real-time interactive features.

Internet Protocol

TV
IPTV
It is a technology that delivers
video or TV broadcasts over the
Internet.
Internet TV, in simple terms, is
video and audio delivered over an
Internet connection. It's also known as Internet
protocol television, or IPTV.
 You can watch Internet TV on a computer screen, a
television screen (through a set-top box) or a mobile
device like a cell phone.
History of IPTV
In year 1994, ABC's World News was the first
television show to be broadcasted over the Internet.
Term IPTV first appeared in 1995 with the
founding of Precept Software by Judith Estrin and
Bill Carrico .
Software was written primarily by Steve Casner,
Karl Auerbach, and Cha Chee Kuan.
REVOLUTION
 True interactive television.
 See anything you want to see, any time, any where, on
any device .
 Reduced infrastructure costs.
 IPTV works on your existing internet connection .
 Infinite number of channels .
EARLIER…..
the only ways to watch television were through
over-the-air broadcasts and cable signals.
With broadcast TV, an antenna picks up radio
waves to transmit pictures and sound to your
television set.
With cable TV, wires connect to your TV itself &
these wires run from your house to the nearest
cable TV station, which acts as one big antenna.
IPTV components
Video encoders
Video server
Middleware
Conditional access system/digital right management
STB/terminal
How IPTV works:
Two primary protocols involved in IPTV.

Internet group management protocol (IGMP) –

used to change channel multicast.
Part of network layer in OSI model.

Real time streaming protocol (RTSP) – used for

video on demand unicast
 part of application layer in OSI model.
IPTV TYPES
Live broadcasts -
it's like watching live TV on your computer screen.
You can't pause, back up or skip through parts of
the broadcast that don't interest you.

On-demand videos-
arranged like a playlist. Episodes or clips are
arranged by title or channel or in categories like
news, sports or music videos. You choose exactly
what you want to watch, when you want to watch
it.
How can IPTV compete with
existing TV services?
Price: Get your telephone, data and video (called a
“Triple Play”) for a monthly cost.
Return path: watching TV on an IP connected service
allows delivery of a wide range of extra services from
ads to interactive options.
An IPTV supplier can push out multiple new channels
across their existing bandwidth relatively easily.
Differences between IPTV and traditional AV
solutions:
Feature Conventional distribution IPTV distribution
Picture quality Possible noise Digital broadcast quality and
DVD quality
Displays TV display PC and MAC desktops and
TV displays
Cabling Needs additional coax cabling Runs on IT network
Wide screen Manual widescreen selection Automatic widescreen
switching
High definition HD may be supported HD fully supported
Multi-site Requires costly dedicated Uses company network links
links
Management None Remote system management
via the network
User control None Control user access to IPTV
channels
Scalability Needs non cabling Easily scalable because its on
IT network
STREAMING AUDIO AND VIDEO

 Basic steps to watching streaming audio and video

:
1. A server holds video data.
2. When you want to watch a video, you click the
right command, like "Play" or "Watch." This
sends a message to the server, telling it that you
want to watch a certain video.
3. The server responds by sending you the necessary
data. It uses streaming media protocols to make
sure the data arrives in good condition and with
all the pieces in the right order.
ADVANTAGES
IPTV signals are 100% digital, so the days of analog
TV are fast becoming a thing of the past.
Works on your existing internet connection , Install
your set-top box and power it on.
Doesn't require wires to get its signal. The newest
IPTV set-top boxes work on wireless signals.
Programs can be stored on servers and ready to view
with the click of a button on your IPTV remote.
Problems with IPTV:
Today even many of the household have access to
broadband many of those have to low bandwidth to get
an acceptable quality of media.
The network have to be built so that end to end quality
of services can be guaranteed, which is not the case
with most of the networks these days.
Set-top boxes are expensive.
If you want to watch another channel on a different TV
you will have to buy another box.
IPTV 2.0 what does future hold?
Location-based traffic and weather reports
IM buddy lists
Real time chat
Local theater tickets , ringtones
Live polls
Amazon – style e commerce
Create and share home videos
Doctor and nurse house calls
Game Console IPTV
XBOX
Has the ability to download TV shows on demand and stream content as
well. With their consent partnership with Netflix this platform will be a
platform to watch.
WII
The Wii doesn’t have a strong IPTV capability however it does have the
ability to view sites like youtube and hulu . There is requirement of paying
fro and downloading a web browser that is based on Pera technology
PS3
In the gaming console market SONY understands what IPTV is and how
to leverage its technology . Sony is planning a major announcement with
IPTV innovation in mind
What is Next : IPTV NGN

IPTV with NGN is a future of IPTV .

A Next-Generation Network (NGN) can be describe as a

telecommunications packet-based network that handles
heavy traffic (such as voice, data, and multimedia).
