 What is mobile computing?

 Wireless Network Technology
 Comparison to wired networks
 Benefits of Mobile Computing
 Types of wireless devices
 Limitations of Mobile Computing
 Applications of Mobile Computing
 Future of Mobile Computing
What Is Mobile Computing?

 What is computing?
Operation of computers.
 What is the mobile?
That someone /something can move or be moved easily and
quickly from place to place
 What is mobile computing?
Users with portable computers still have network connections
while they move
What Is Mobile Computing? (Cont.)

 Mobile computing is human-computer interaction by

which a computer is expected to be transported during
normal usage, which allows for transmission of data, voice
and video. Mobile computing involves mobile
communication, mobile hardware, and mobile software.
 Mobile Computing is an umbrella term used to describe
technologies that enable people to access network services
anyplace, anytime, and anywhere.
What Is Mobile Computing? (Cont.)

 A simple definition could be:

Mobile Computing is using a computer (of one kind or another)
while on the move
 Another definition could be:
Mobile Computing is when a (work) process is moved from a
normal fixed position to a more dynamic position.
 A third definition could be:
Mobile Computing is when a work process is carried out
somewhere where it was not previously possible.
Wireless Network Technology

 Wireless networks are computer networks that are not

connected by cables of any kind

 wireless network enables enterprises to avoid the costly

process of introducing cables into buildings or as a
connection between different equipment locations.
Comparison to Wired Net.

• Wired Networks • Mobile Networks

- high bandwidth - low bandwidth

- low bandwidth variability - high bandwidth variability
- can listen on wire - hidden terminal problem
- high power machines - low power machines
- high resource machines - low resource machines
- need physical - need proximity
access(security) - higher delay
- low delay
- disconnected operation
- connected operation
Benefits of Mobile Computing

 Connectivity: You can stay connected to all sources at all

times.
 Social Engagement: You can interact with a variety of
users via the Internet.
 Personalization: You can tailor your mobile computing to
your individual needs.
Benefits of Mobile Computing

 It saves time and enhances productivity with a better

return on investment (RoI)

 It provides entertainment, news and information on the

move with streaming data, video and audio
Types of Wireless Devices

 Laptops
 Palmtops
 PDAs
 Cell phones
 Pagers
 Sensors
Limitation of Mobile Computing

 Power consumption: When a power outlet or portable

generator is not available, mobile computers must rely
entirely on battery power.
 Transmission interferences: Weather, terrain, and the
range from the nearest signal point can all interfere with
signal reception
Limitation of Mobile Computing

 Range and Bandwith : Mobile Internet access is

generally slower than direct cable connections
 Security standards : Security is a major concern
while concerning the mobile computing standards
on the fleet
Limitation of Mobile Computing

 Potential health hazards: People who use mobile devices

while driving are often distracted from driving and are
thus assumed more likely to be involved in traffic
accidents
 Human interface with device: Screens and keyboards tend
to be small, which may make them hard to use
Applications of Mobile Computing
Applications of Mobile Computing(cont.)

 Emergency Services
Applications of Mobile Computing
(Cont.)
 For Estate Agents
 In courts
 In companies
 Stock Information Collection/Control
 Credit Card Verification
 Taxi/Truck Dispatch
 Electronic Mail/Paging
Future of Mobile Computing

 Use of Artificial Intelligence

 Integrated Circuitry -> Compact Size
 Increases in Computer Processor speeds
Conclusion:

 Mobile computing has severe limitations

- however, it is far from impossible, and technology improves all the
time
 Lots of challenges
- some have (good) solutions, many others are still waiting to be
solved
