Contemporary Architecture

This document discusses elements and principles of contemporary architecture. It identifies size and scale as additional elements specific to architecture. It describes classic and modern architectural materials like wood, stone, brick, cast iron, structural steel, and reinforced concrete. It then explains important structural devices in architecture such as post-and-lintel systems, cantilevers, trusses, arches, vaults, domes, shell structures, and solar panels.

CAST IRON set the stage for steel-skeleton construction
in architecture. It permits the construction of tall
building without prohibitively thick walls.

The technology of STEEL MANUFACTURE and

FABRICATION advanced the architecture through
tubular, extruded, and corrugated steel products.

REINFORCED CONCRETE or FERROCONCRETE is vastly

more efficient than stonemasonry piers and archers. The
joints are the weakest points in classical structures.

Structural Devices

Post-and-Lintel

It is the most ancient of construction device and still

enojoys wide use today. It consists of two vertical supports
bridged by a horizontal beam.
Structural Devices

Cantilever

It is the horizontal extension of a beam or a slab into a

space beyond its supporting post. Its free end is
unsupported.
Structural Devices

Truss System

It is an application of the geometric fact that no angle of

triangle can be changed without altering the dimensions
of the sides.
Structural Devices
Arch
It is used to support bridges and viaducts and in
association with large dominical and vaulted sructures.

VAULT is a succession
of identical arches in
file order, one behind
the other.
Structural Devices

Dome

The placement of a dome on a cylindrical drum over a

circular foundation is logical from the standpoint of
geometry and construction.
Structural Devices

Shell Structures

These are the beneficiaries of reinforced concrete and

superior mathematical tools for calculating stresses and
the strength of materials.
Structural Devices

Solar Panels

Solar panel roofings generates electricit that can provide

power to the entire building anytime of the day and night.
