Energy Efficient Building

- 40-50% of global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions are from buildings. Energy efficient or green buildings aim to minimize this impact through designs that significantly reduce energy needs for heating and cooling. - Key objectives of green buildings include having a low environmental impact, being energy efficient to reduce both energy and water usage, and promoting occupant health. Design concepts focus on sustainable site planning, energy performance optimization, renewable energy usage, and conservation of materials and resources. - Common elements of green building design are sustainable site design, water conservation, energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and conservation of materials. This includes considerations like building orientation, insulation, efficient appliances, waste reduction, and use of sustainable materials.

ENERGY EFFICIENT

BUILDING/ GREEN BUILDING

PREPARED BY
SANTOSH BASNET
INTODUCTION

 Energy efficient buildings (new constructions or renovated existing buildings)

can be defined as buildings that are designed to provide a significant
reduction of the energy need for heating and cooling, independently of the
energy and of the equipment's that will be chosen to heat or cool the
building.
 The aim of a energy efficient building /green building is to minimize the
demand on non-renewable resources, maximize the utilization efficiency of
these resources, when in use, and maximize the reuse, recycling, and
utilization of renewable resources.
Why energy efficient building??

 40% of Global Energy Consumption is

building related
 50% of Global Green House emission is due
to Buildings

Objective of green building

 Low impact: Minimize impact on natural environment.

 Energy Efficient: Reduces energy usages and water usages.
 Healthy : protect occupant health and productivity.
 Minimize waste: the reduction in construction material waste by optimizing
building dimensions and recycling.
Green Building Concept

 Sustainable site planning

 Building Design
 optimization
 Energy performance optimization
 Renewal energy
 utilization
 Water and Waste management
 Solid waste management
 Sustainable building material and
construction technology
 Health, well being and environmental
quality
Five major elements of green building
design
 Sustainable Site Design
 Water Conservation and Quality
 Energy and Environment
 Indoor Environmental Quality;
 Conservation of Materials and Resources.
Various energy saving concept in green
building
 Site selection and design: Evaluate site in terms of the location of buildings in
order to optimize the use of passive solar energy, natural day lighting, and natural
breezes and ventilation.
 Orientation :In the northern hemisphere, south facing windows have the greatest
exposure to the sun. West facing windows need to be carefully designed.
 Walls and Roof: Designing the foundation, walls and roofs is to minimize
conductive heat loss/gain while minimizing uncontrolled movement of air into the
building.
 Energy Efficient Appliances: Use of energy efficient and eco-friendly appliance
reduces utility cost.
 Waste reduction: Green architecture also seeks to reduce waste of energy, water
and materials during construction.
 Materials: Use durable products and materials, Use materials made from recycled
products.
Cost comparison

 A Green building costs 3-8% more than the conventional buildings.

 The cost is recovered within two to three years through savings in
maintenance costs.
 The Life Cycle Cost of Energy efficient buildings is lower than that of the
conventional buildings (Source: TERI-GRIHA)
