Software is programs or instructions that tell the computer


what to do and how to do it.
Computers need software to do even a simple job, without
software computers cannot function.

System Software
System software coordinates the complete system
hardware and provides an environment or platform for
all the other types of software to work in. It is the most
basic type of software in any computer system, which is
essential for other programs, applications and indeed
for the whole computer system to function.

Application Software
Application software are those that help the user
perform the tasks of his/her choice. They are non-
essential software which are installed and run
depending upon the requirements, in the environment
provided by the system software.

Freeware are a type of software that anyone

Shareware are usually distributed for free on a


trial basis. It can be shared without violation of
any laws. They usually stop working or prompt

About OS

An operating system (OS) is the program that, after being


initially loaded into the computer by a boot program, manages
all of the other application programs in a computer. The
application programs make use of the operating system by
making requests for services through a defined application
program interface (API). In addition, users can interact directly
with the operating system through a user interface such as a What is OS?
command line or a graphical user interface (GUI).

An operating system can perform the following services for
applications:

• It manages the sharing of internal memory among multiple applications.


• It handles input and output to and from attached hardware devices, such as
hard disks, printers and dial-up ports.
• It sends messages to each application or interactive user (or to a system
operator) about the status of operation and any errors that may have
occurred.
• It can offload the management of batch jobs (for example, printing) so that
the initiating application is freed from this work.

Mobile OS

Mobile operating systems are those that are designed specifically to


power smartphones, tablets, and wearables, the mobile devices we take with us
wherever we go. The top popular mobile operating systems are Android and iOS, but
others include BlackBerry OS, webOS, and watchOS.

Windows OS

Windows is Microsoft’s flagship operating system, standard for home and business
computers. Introduced in 1985, the GUI-based OS has been released in many versions
since then. The user-friendly Windows 95 was largely responsible for the rapid
development of personal computing. (Windows versions : Windows 1,2,3,NT 3.5,95,NT
4,98,2000,me,XP,Vista,7,8,8.1,10.)

Mac OS

macOS previously Mac OS X and later OS X, Roman numeral "X" pronounced "ten") is a
series of graphical operating systems developed and marketed by Apple Inc. since 2001.
It is the primary operating system for Apple's Mac family of computers. Within the
market of desktop, laptop and home computers, and by web usage, it is the second most
widely used desktop OS, after Microsoft Windows.

Linux OS

Linux is a Unix-like operating system that was designed to provide personal


computer users a free or very low-cost alternative. Linux has a reputation as
a very efficient and fast-performing system.
