IMPORTANCE OF

DIVISIONAL CHARTS
IN
MEDICAL ASTROLOGY
 As per ‘Prasna Marga’, diseases are of two types.

 They are Nija (Natural) and Agantaka (acquired)

 Nija is subdivided into Sareerotha (physical) and

Chittotha (mental).

 Agnathuka is subdivided into Drista Nimittaja (known

reasons) and Adrishta Nimittaja (unknown reasons)
DISEASE

NIJA AGANTUKA
(NATURAL) (ACQUIRED)

CHITTOTHA ADRISHTA
SAREEROTHA DRISHTA NIMITTAJA
(MENTAL) NIMITTAJA (UNKNOWN
(PHYSICAL)
8TH & 5TH (KNOWN CAUSES) CAUSES)
8TH HOUSE 6TH HOUSE
HOUSES BADHAKA
 SAREEROTHA (PHYSICAL):
 Saroritha or physical or bodily diseases can be
determined by considering the strength of 8th
house, its lord, the planet aspecting or
occupying it.
 There are seven variations of bodily troubles
arising from (1) Vata (2) Pitta (3) Kapha
(4) Sannipatha
 CHITTOTHA (MENTAL):
 Anger, fear, sorrow, desires and such emotions
come under Chittotha or mental diseases.
These can be determined by the relationship
between the lords of 5th and 8th houses.
 DRISHTA NIMITTAJA:
 Curses, incantations (Kshudra mantras), sudden falls
from elevation and accidents come under Drishta
nimittaja and these should be ascertained from 6th
house, its lord or the planet aspecting the 6th house or
the planet occupying the 6th house. If 6th lord & 8th
lord are related, the intensity of the disease will be much
more.

 ADRISTHA NIMITTAJA:
 The Adrishtanimittaja diseases are said to be brought
about by spirits, devils, hob globins, ghosts, etc
(Badhaka Grahas). In Prashna Marga, it is mentioned
that, such types of Adrishta nimittaja diseases can be
identified by the planet badhakadhipati in the horoscope.
 Bhadhaka Grahas: - For Movable signs,
badhakaadhipathi is 11th lord. For Fixed signs, it is 9th
lord and for Dual signs it is 7th lord.
DIVISIONAL CHARTS IN
MEDICAL ASTROLOGY
Divisional charts play an important role in
medical astrology. With out the analysis of
divisional charts the study of horoscope
will not be a completed one and justified.
Even though all the divisional charts are
important, Drekhana, Navamsa,
Shashtamsa, Ashtamamsa, Saptamamsa,
Dwadasamsa, Trimsamsa and Shastyamsa
are having more important.
DREKKANA
One drekkana is 1/3rd part of the sign. So, the extent of drekkana is 10
degrees.
TYPES OF DREKKANA

I TYPE OF DIVISION
There are three Drekkanas-
1st drekhana is Naarada drekhana, 2nd drekhana is Agasthya drekhana and
3rd drekhana is Durvasa drekhana.

II TYPE OF DIVISION
1. Sarpa drekkana
2. Ayudha drekkana
3. Chatushpada drekkana or Pasu drekkana
4. Khaga drekkana or Pakshi drekkana
5. Stree drekkana
In which drekkana, Moon is posited, that person will have the corresponding
mentality.
 1. Sarpa drekkana:- Mithuna 2nd and 3rd drekkana, Scorpio 1st and 2nd
drekkana; Pisces 3rd drekkana.
 The above mentioned drekhanas are the Sarpa drekkanas. If Moon is posited in any
one of the above drekkanas, it is said to be posited in Sarpa drekkana.
 These people are very volatile. They have cruel mentality, always fighting, highly
intelligent, criminal, vengeance, strikes very fast, can live on land and in water also.
If a female has lagna in Sarpa drekkana, she can be a Visha Kanya.
 2. Ayudha drekkana:-Aries 1st and 2nd drekkanas, Mithuna 3rd drekkana ,
Virgo 2nd drekkana, Libra 1st drekkana, Sagittarius 3rd drekkana, Capricorn 1st
drekkana, Aquarius 3rd drekkana, Pisces 1st drekkana.
 The above are the Ayudha drekhanas.

 If Moon is in Ayudha drekkana, he becomes a sadist, of destructive

nature, murderous qualities, killing without emotions. If 8th lord is
in Ayudha drekkana and connected to 8th house, it may indicate
death because of vehicular accidents.
 If this combination occurs in fiery sign, death can be due to
explosion or fire accident.
 If this combination occurs in Airy sign, accidental death may take
place in air.
 If this combination occurs in Watery sign, accidental death due to
water- floods, drowning, etc.
 9th lord should not be in Ayudha drekkana as Bhagyam is afflicted;
 3rd lord or 8th lord or 10th lord – any one of them in Ayudha
drekkana indicates untimely death.
 3. Pasu drekkana/ Chatushpada drekkana:-
 Aries 2nd drekkana, Taurus 2nd and 3rd drekkana, Libra 3rd;
Scorpio 3rd; Sagittarius 1st; Capricorn 1st drekhanas.
 These are the Pasu drekhanas.
 The person will have animal behaviour without any rules
and principles; no sympathy, self-centered;
 If 8th lord is in this drekkana, it indicates death due to
animal.

 4. Khaga drekkana/ Pakshi drekkana:- Aries 2nd, Gemini 2nd;

Leo 1st; Aquarius 1st; Libra 2nd;
 These are the Pakshi drekhanas.

 5. Stree drekkana:-
 Taurus 1st; Mithuna 1st; Virgo 1st and 3rd; Sagittarius 2nd;
Capricorn 2nd; Aquarius 2nd; Pisces 2nd
 These are the Stree drekhanas.
 These are the most benefic drekkana; very good behaviour,
mastery in fine arts; very tender nature and body, liked by every
body, always calm and cool; interested in comforts and luxuries.
 Moon, Lagna lord, 5th lord and 10th lord are posited in this
drekkana, it indicates successful life.
HEALTH AND DREKKANA

DREKKANA AND PARTS OF THE BODY

 Different houses of drekhana chart represent
different parts of body. Hence Drekhana is also
called SEAT OF DISEASE
 1ST drekkana indicates head up to neck,

 2nd drekkana indicates from neck to waist,

 3rd drekkana indicates from waist to feet,

 The 12 houses in each drekhana are indicating

different parts of body as shown below.

 The Drekkana chart is then divided into three charts –D3-1, D3-2
and D3-3.

 The problematic planets (health wise) are noted from the D-1 chart
and in order to find out the seat or the root of the disease, their
placement in D-3 chart is verified by distributing into three
Drekhana charts.

 All the planets that are posited in the first drekkana are posited in
D3-1 chart. The problematic planets, belonging to the 1st drekkana
– their positions are noted and the body parts represented by the
houses containing these planets are the vulnerable / weak and are
prone to disease. These body parts represent the seat of the
disease.

 The same procedure is followed for the other two D3-2 and D3-3
charts which contain the planets posited in the 2nd and 3rd
drekkana respectively.

 Ketu or 6th lord or 8th lord when transiting on the afflicted bhavas
in D-3, it is the time of on set of disease.
The health wise problem giving planets for this chart are:-
Natural malefics Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu and Sun,
8th lord of D-1 Jupiter, 6th lord of D-1 Venus,
Natural 6th lord, Mercury

 In D3-1, the planets

posited are:-
 - 6th house – Natural
malefic, Rahu is MOON

posited. 6th house in RAH

the 1st drekkana D 3- 1

KET
indicates right jaw.
 - 12th house – Ketu is ASC
posited. 12th house
indicates left eye.
 In D3-2, the planets
posited are:-
 - Mars, a natural malefic, JUP
is posited in 4th house, in VEN
the 2nd drekkana, D 3- 2
indicating right side of
the body.
 - 8th lord, Jupiter and 6th
lord, Venus are posited in
MARS ASC

6th house which indicates

right lung and breast.
 -In D3-3, the planets SUN
posited are:- MERC

 - Natural malefic,
Saturn(retrograde) is
posited in 4th house
which indicates right D 3- 3
thigh
 - Sun and natural 6th lord
Mercury are posited in ASC
8th house which indicates SAT®

left calf.
 As drekkana indicates the seat of the disease,
the houses in the above three charts, where the
malefics are posited, show the parts of the body
that are prone to disease for this native.

 IMPORTANT POINT:-
 9th house, 9th lord of D-1 and Jupiter should be
more prominent in D-3. These people do not
have any affection for their body. Hence, they
will have many bodily ailments or deformities
(SAINTS).
SHASHTAMSA (D-6)
 Shastamsa (D-6) is also called Kaulaka or
Chittamsa.
 D-6 is basically seen for disease and
disease curing capacity.
 D-6 is to be correlated with D-3 to find out
cure for any kind of disease. Internal
diseases like B.P., Asthma, diabetes, T.B.,
etc can occur due to one’s past karmas
where as diseases of external parts like
limbs, etc are due to our present karma.
 Drekkana is the seat
of the disease. One DREKHANA

drekkana contains
D-3
(100)
two Kaulakas.
 1st Kaulaka indicates
internal disease.
 2nd Kaulaka indicates KOULUKA KOULUKA
external disease D-6 D-6
(50) (50)
Internal diseases are of three kinds:-
 1) Related to internal organs

 2) Diseases occurred due to unknown reasons.

 3) Hereditary diseases.

External diseases are also of three kinds:-

 1)diseases due to wrong food habits; wrong social and
moral conduct or behavior; negligence.
 2) Diseases due to known reasons and wounds caused
by enemies
 3) Accidents, wrong medication and wrong treatment,
non-payment of dues (this also gives external diseases)
Malefic planet in Koulaka
One Rasi contains 6 shastiamsas / koulakas. If a
natural malefic planet is posited in-
 1st koulaka – disease or wound to forehead.
 2nd koulaka – disease related to hair.
 3rd koulaka – diseases related to blood.
 4th koulaka – diseases related to eyes.
 5th koulaka – wounds due to animals.
 6th koulaka – diseases related to mouth, tongue
& throat.
 If the malefic planet is Rahu or Ketu the order
will be reversed, i.e., 1st kouluka represents
diseases related to mouth , tongue & throat, 2nd
kouluka represents wounds due to animals and
so on.
 If the natural malefics are Saturn, Rahu or Gulika ,the
disease may occur because of infected food; over food
habits or inadequate food habits; due to consumption of
poisonous material, either consciously (tobacco, etc.) or
unconsciously; intoxicating material consumption.
 If the natural malefics are Mars and Ketu, they create
excessive fire and excessive energy.
 If the natural malefic is Sun, problem is in circulatory
system i.e. blocking of free flow of fluids in the body.
 Lagna lord of D-1, Lagna lord of D-3 and Ketu should be
seen in D-6 i.e. all these three planets should be strong
in D-6.
 Mars in 6th house in D-6 is very good. 6th lord of D-1,
if associated with Mars in D-6, the person will have
control over the disease. If Mars is in 10th house in D-6,
the person will have disease-free life.
 Ketu, 6th lord of D-1 or dispositor of 6th lord of D-1 in
D-3 – if any malefic influence is there on these planets in
D-6, one will be diseased through life. If any of these
planets is associated with Mars or Saturn in D-6, there is
every possibility of amputation or loss of limbs.
 Suppose any disease/ accident is indicated in any
planet’s dasa, propitiation should be done to that planet
and the dispositor of the planet in D-5.
 If Mercury is related to Mars in D-6, there will be glow
in the skin.
 In D-6, Lagna represents all problems and evils. 6th
house represents punishment from enemies. 11th house
represents death on account of evils, diseases or
enemies.(So, the dasa of planet related to 11th house of
D-6 should be treated very carefully).
In native’s D-6, the death of his relatives can be seen. In
D-6, from 1st house to 6th house the relatives of the native
are represented as follows.

HOUSE RELATIVES DEATH INFLICTING BHAVA

1 self 2
2 both parents 3
3 co-born 4
4 spouse 5
5 children 6
6 enemy 7

2nd house is death afflicting house from each house (i.e. the
2nd house from that particular relative’s house)
Eg:- 2nd house is maraka from self(1st house).
3rd house is maraka for both parents(2nd house).
4th house is maraka for co-born(3rd house).
D-8 ( ASHTAMAMSA )
 D-8 is seen for longevity, incurable diseases which either can cause
death or death like situations and sudden accidents.
 SIGNS :-Scorpio sign is the prime source of cancer disease. The
sign Cancer is the 4th sign for Kalapurusha.
 These two are very important signs. Moon gets debilitated in
Scorpio, which is the 8th sign for Kalapurusha. Scorpio sign lord ,
Mars is getting debilitated in Cancer i.e. they are both debilitated in
each other’s signs.
 Moon is debilitated at 3 degrees in Scorpio, which is in Visakha
star(Jupiter’s star).Visakha means branching. Uncontrollable
branching or spreading is nothing but cancer disease.
 Jupiter, Mercury and Saturn stars are in Scorpio which give long
lasting diseases. Hence these planets can give long standing
diseases. Hence these planets and Scorpio sign should be analyzed
in D-8.
 Rahu is considered to give cancer. Moon , Rahu
association or Mars, Rahu association and some
connection of Rahu to Scorpio- these combinations can
give cancer disease.
 Mars in Scorpio Lagna, without the aspect of Venus or
Jupiter is a combination for tumor, ulcer or cancer
( given in Sambhu Hora Prakasika). If Mars is well-
associated or aspected by Jupiter or Venus, then the
disease will be cured. We have to see the association of
planets Rahu, Mars, Moon and Scorpio sign in D-8.
 If 6th lord of D-1 is having any relation to Ketu or 8th
lord or Mercury in D-8, one will have lingering diseases.
But, if Scorpio or Mars in D-8 is strong, the diseases can
be controlled.
 Saturn in Mars Navamsa joins Ketu in the 4th house with
Jupiter afflicted can cause tumor, ulcer or cancer. Saturn
and Ketu in 6th house or 7th house or 12th house also
can cause tumor, ulcer or cancer( Sambhu Hora
Prakasika).
 HEART DISEASES:-
 4th house indicates chest of Kalapurusha. So, Cancer
sign represents chest of Kalapurusha. Mars gets
debilitated in Aslesha(280) which is a Mercury star. So,
the main problematic planet is Mercury. If Saturn has
any relationship with either Mercury or Mars and
associated with Cancer sign or 4th house or 4th lord in
D-8, one will have heart disease.

 OTHER DISEASES:-
 In D-8, if Saturn is associated with 2nd lord or 8th lord,
then death may be because of heart problem. Saturn, if
connected to 8th house or Lagna in D-8, it gives
paralysis.
 Mercury gives problems related to nerves.
 If 8th lord of D-1, Lagna of D-8 and Mercury are related
in D-8, then the combination can give Parkinson’s
disease.

GANESHA ASWINI KUMARA YAMA
 Dwadasamsa (D-12) indicates cause and cure of
the disease.
 For each Dwadasamsa, there is an adhidevata.
 1st dwadasamsa - adhidevata – Ganesha
 2nd dwadasamsa – adhidevata – Ashwini
Kumara
 3rd dwadasamsa – adhidevata – Yama
 4th dwadasamsa – adhidevata – Sarpa
 Affliction to Ganesha Dwadasamsa indicates lack of self-respect
and control over senses.
Remedy is to cultivate discipline and develop faith in God.

 Affliction to Aswini Kumara dwadasamsa indicates .lack of discipline

in food habits and the persons do not follow the advice of the
doctors.
Remedy is maintaining discipline in food habits. He should follow the
instructions of doctor meticulously.

 Affliction to Yama Dwadasamsa – indicates extreme habits – suffers

from extreme likes and dislikes, creating conflicting situations.
Remedy – the person should adopt always positive attitude.

 Affliction to Sarpa Dwadasamsa (another name, Bhoga) – indicates

indulgence in luxurious life. He becomes a slave to senses.
Remedy – connection to this we can get in D-30 and we have to
propitiate for the planet in D-30 or to Subramanyeshwara(sarpa
swaroopa).
D-30 ( TRIMSAMSA )
 Trimsamsa is the one-thirtieth division of a sign. Parasara advises
the use of this ‘Trimsamsa’ for determining the evils that the native
has to suffer due to past karma.
 The Trimsamsa or D-30 chart is used to delineate various kinds of
evils one is likely of face. Divisional Charts are divided into 5
categories.
 D-1 TO D-12 - Physical level.
 D-13 TO D-24 - conscious level.
 D-25 TO D-36 - sub-conscious level.
 D-37 TO D-48 - super-conscious level.
 D-49 TO D-60 - supra-conscious level.
 In sub-conscious level, D-30 indicates D-6 of physical level. This is
the importance of D-30.
 D-6 is the base for D-30. So, D-30 is very important for analyzing
diseases, aristas, physical and mental weakness.
 If any planet is weak in D-30, the native will be suffering
from the weakness indicated by the planet and the
concerned addiction will strike first and later will be
followed by other addictions.
 if Saturn sign becomes lagna in D-30, one should do
‘pranayama’.
 If lagna is of Jupiter sign, one should do ‘dhyanam’.
 If lagna is of Mars sign, one should do ‘deepam’ and
‘nitya deepaaradhana’.
 If lagna is of Venus sign, one should do ‘pooja’ and
‘daanam’.
 If lagna is of Mercury sign, one should do japam’.
 If these propitiations are done, the native will survive
from weaknesses.
D -7 (SAPTAMSA)
 D-7 is exclusively analyzed for children. It is studied here
in relation to Medical Astrology. The remedial measure
for not begetting the children is indicated in D-
7(saptamsa). Each sign is divided into 7 parts and each
part is called Saptamsa.
 In odd signs, 7 Saptamsas are ruled by 7 rasas in the
following order – Kshara (salt), Ksheera(milk),
Dadhi(curd), Ghrutha(ghee), Ikshu(sugar cane juice),
Madhu(honey), Suddha jala(pure water).
 For even signs, the order of rasas is reversed.
 In D-1, the Saptamsa in which the Lagna, Lagna Lord
and 5th lord are posited is seen and the corresponding
rasa is to be consumed by the native as medicine for
begetting the children.
BEEJA SPHUTA & KSHETRA SPHUTA:
 Beeja sphuta is seen in male horoscope and kshetra sphuta is
seen in female horoscope.
 Beeja sphuta is the resultant longitude of sum of Sun, Venus and
Jupiter’s longitudes.
 Kshetra sphuta is the resultant longitude of sum of Moon, Mars
and Jupiter’s longitudes.
 Beeja sphuta should be in odd signs in rasi (D1), Navamsa (D9)
and Saptams (D7).
 The sign having Beeja sphuta should not be afflicted. If the 7th
house from Beeja sphuta is occupied by Saturn, it indicates that
there can be a blockage in the VAS DEFERENCE
 Kshetra sphuta should be in even signs in rasi (D1), Navamsa
(D9) and Saptams (D7).
 The sign having Kshetra sphuta should not be afflicted. If the 7th
house from Kshetra sphuta is occupied by Saturn, it indicates
that there can be a blockage in the. FALLOPIAN TUBE
 Afflicted Jupiter in Saptamsa chart indicates hormonal deficiency.
Particularly, if Jupiter is afflicted in the 6th house from Beeja
sphuta or Kshetra sphuta there can be hormonal deficiency.
 This is an attempt to provide some hints related
to medical astrology for the students who are
interested in doing research in this field.
