Free Fall Presentation

This document discusses free fall problems and provides examples of calculating: - Velocity after a given time using v=gt - Distance fallen after a time using d=1/2gt^2 - Height reached by an object thrown upward using kinematic equations and a=-9.8 m/s^2 Examples are given for calculating velocity, distance, time and height for objects in free fall or projectiles.

SAMPLE PROBLEM 1

HOW FAST
FREE FALL
IS???
IF AN OBJECT IS DROPPED FROM REST AT THE
TOP OF A CLIFF, HOW FAST WILL IT BE GOING
AFTER 1 S?
 When an object is  Given:
falling, assume that  a = 9.8 m/s2
 a = 9.8 m/s2 “from  Vi = 0
rest” tells us that Vi = 0  t=1s
 “how fast will it be  Unknown: Vf = ?
going?” is asking us to
find Vf = ? (this is the  Formula: Vf = Vi + at
unknown)  Solution:
 the first problem gives  Vf = 0 + (9.8 m/s2) (1 s)
us a time of t = 1 s  Answer: Vf = 9.8 m/s
IF AN OBJECT IS DROPPED FROM REST AT THE TOP
OF A CLIFF, HOW FAST WILL IT BE GOING AFTER ….
2 S???? 10 S?????
 Given:  Given:
 a = 9.8 m/s2  a = 9.8 m/s2
 Vi = 0  Vi = 0
 t=2s  t = 10 s
 Unknown: Vf = ?  Unknown: Vf = ?
 Formula: Vf = Vi + at  Formula: Vf = Vi + at
 Solution:  Solution:
 Vf = 0 + (9.8 m/s2) (2 s)  Vf = 0 + (9.8 m/s2) (10
 Answer: Vf = 19.6 m/s s)
 Answer: Vf = 98 m/s
CALCULATING HOW FAST FREE FALL IS

If we use Vf = Vi + at, and Vi = 0 then we

actually have an equation that reads… Vf = at,
where a = 9.8 m/s2. When a = 9.8 m/s2, we
call that constant g. Therefore, we can use the
following new, or derived equation…
 Instantaneous speed = acceleration X elapsed
time
 v = gt
SAMPLE PROBLEM 2

HOW FAR
FREE FALL
IS???
THE DEMON DROP RIDE AT CEDAR POINT AMUSEMENT
PARK FALLS FREELY FOR 1.5 S AFTER STARTING FROM
REST.
WHAT IS ITS VELOCITY AT THE END OF HOW FAR DOES IT FALL?
1.5 S?
 Given:  Given:
 a = 9.8 m/s2
 a = 9.8 m/s2
 Vi = 0 t = 1.5 s
 Vi = 0 (starting from rest)
 Vf = 14.7 m/s (from previous
 t = 1.5 s
part)
 Unknown: Vf = ?
 Unknown: d = ? (how far)
 Formula: Vf = Vi + at
 Formula: d = Vit + ½ at2
 Solution:
 Solution:
 Vf = 0 + (9.8 m/s2) (1.5 s)
 d = (0)(1.5s) + ½ (9.8 m/s2)
 Answer: Vf = 14.7 m/s (1.5s)2
 Answer: d = 11.03 m
CALCULATING HOW FAR FREE FALL IS

 If we use d = Vit + ½ at2 , and Vi = 0 then we

actually have an equation that reads… d = ½
at2 , where a = 9.8 m/s2. When a = 9.8 m/s2,
we call that constant g. Therefore, we can use
the following new, or derived equation…
 d = ½ gt2
ACCELERATION DUE TO GRAVITY
 If the object is moving down, a = 9.8 m/s2
 a = 9.8 m/s2 (speeding up)
 If the object is moving up, a = - 9.8 m/s2

 a = - 9.8 m/s2 (slowing down)

 Throwing an object into the air

 When an object is thrown into the air, the
velocity at its highest point is ZERO!!!
SAMPLE PROBLEM 3

HOW HIGH
FREE FALL
IS???
HOW HIGH DOES THE BALL RISE? HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO REACH
ITS HIGHEST POINT?
 Given: a = -9.8 m/s2 (notice
the negative sign, ball moving  Given:
upward)  a = -9.8 m/s2
 Vi = 4 m/s  Vi = 4 m/s
 Vf = 0 m/s (at the top, before it  Vf = 0 m/s
starts to fall, it stops)  d = 0.816 m
 Unknown: d = ?  Unknown: t = ?
 Formula: 2ad = Vf2 – Vi2  Formula: Vf = Vi + at
 (solve for d) d = Vf2 – Vi2  (solve for t) t = Vf – Vi
 2a a
 Solution:  Solution:
 d = (0)2 – (4 m/s)2  t = 0 m/s – 4 m/s
 2(-9.8 m/s2 )  (-9.8 m/s2)
 Answer: d = 0.816 m  Answer: t = 0.408 s

A BALL IS THROWN VERTICALLY INTO THE AIR

WITH AN INITIAL VELOCITY OF 4 M/S.
PRACTICE PROBLEM:

 Zed is playing with a ball on top of a building but

the ball fell and hit the ground after 2.6 seconds,
what is the final velocity of the ball just before it
hits the ground and how high is the building?
 The Philippine tarsier is capable of jumping to a
height of 1.5 m in hunting for food. Determine the
takeoff speed of the tarsier.
