What is Phobia?
 Phobias:
 Extreme un reasonable irrational fear
 People feel powerless
 Interfere with our daily lives.
 Most Common psychotic disorder

Literal meaning of phobia


 The word phobia comes from the Greek: φόβος (phóbos), meaning
“aversion” or “fear”.
 In ancient Greek mythology phobos was the twin brother
of Deimos (terror).
 phobia may also refer to conditions other than true phobias.

 Specific Phobias ( Fear of specific objects)
 Social Phobias( Fear of social situations)
 Agoraphobias (Fear of public place)
 Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia ( Fear of long

Difference Between Everyday fear and Phobias:
Two type of responses:
 Reasonable Proportionate response
 Disproportionate exaggerated response

 Athazagoraphobia- Fear of Being
Forgotten Phobia
 Achluophobia- Fear of darkness.
 Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut
butter sticking to the roof of the
mouth
 Allodoxaphobia- Fear of
opinions.
 Atelophobia- Fear of
imperfection
 Arithmophobia- Fear of
numbers
What Causes Phobias?
 There is no one answer as to why people develop phobias.
 Phobias can develop in late childhood, adolescence, or in
early adult life following a frightening situation or event.

 Causes for specific phobias:


 Specific (or simple) phobias often seem to develop in early
childhood between the ages of 4 and 8 years old.
 Phobias can also run in families
Causes for social or complex phobias:
 Scientists believe that the complex phobias are often
caused by a combination of genetics, brain chemistry
and certain life experiences.
According to Neuroscience:
 Another highly acceptable cause for complex phobias
may be found in the field of neuroscience.
 the areas of the brain that deal with fear often keep
retrieving the ‘bad’ memories
Treatment of Phobias:
There are mainly two type of treatments for phobias
1. Psychotherapy
2. Medications
Therapy includes:
1. Mental-health therapy
2. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
 Components of CBT
 Didactic component
 Cognitive component
 Behavioral component
Treatment through Medications
1. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor
(SSRI)
2. Beta-blocker medications
