CREATING A LEARNING ENVIRONMENT THAT

CHALLENGES AND ENGAGES ALL STUDENTS
UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING

• Universal Design for Learning (UDL) allows

teachers to find multiple ways of delivering
content to students. UDL covers the educational
needs of all learners.
PRINCIPLE 1: REPRESENTATION
• Presenting information and course content in multiple formats for all students to
have access; provides alternative ways to accessing information, visually or
auditorily for example, by using organizers and providing accurate knowledge.

• Traditional instruction is designed so that students obtain the information they are
receiving by using memorization, by practicing and by taking exams (tests). With
UDL, students are given the opportunity to engage and be actively use their
analyzing skills so that by doing so the gain a real understanding of the content, as
opposed to just memorizing information. UDL reduces the number of learning
barriers.
PRINCIPLE 2: ACTION & EXPRESSION

• Allowing students alternatives ways to express their learning/knowledge; provides

and allows for different ways of responding.

• Traditional learning, which is what many of us grew up experiencing, requires the

student to sit quietly and receive the information that the teacher (authority figure) is
providing. Students are also expected to work of the same assignments at the same
time. It is a “one size fits all” approach.

• UDL allows for exploration and experimentation. Students can benefit from this
approach because the content is based on personal interests, preferences and/or
abilities.
PRINCIPLE 3: ENGAGEMENT

• Stimulating the interest of the student and motivating them to learn in a

variety of ways

• UDL approach is favorable for average learners, English language learners,

students with disabilities, and gifted students.

• UDL allows for student to demonstrate their skills and their knowledge in
several different ways. Everyone is an individual
FOUR COMPONENTS TO LEARNING

1. Learning goals

2. Instructional materials

3. Instructional methods

4. Assessment
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN??

Learning goals: What students are expected to learn.

Instructional Material: Materials are the media and the tools that are used for
teaching students the content.

Instructional Methods: The way in which the content is being taught.

Assessment: The method that is used for measuring the students’

learning.
