Pinch Technology: by S. Rajagopal

Pinch technology is a method for optimally designing heat exchanger networks to minimize the utility costs of heating and cooling. It involves analyzing the hot and cold composite curves of process streams to identify the pinch point temperature, which divides the network into a hot utility side above the pinch and a cold utility side below. The pinch method dictates that no heat exchange can occur across the pinch, and utilities are only used above or below the pinch. This targeting approach ensures the minimum possible hot and cold utilities are required. Network design then involves pairing heat sources and sinks above and below the pinch such that streams are crossed with equal or higher heat capacity flows to satisfy the minimum temperature difference constraints.

Pinch Technology

By
S. RAJAGOPAL
Objective

• Pinch Analysis helps in design of an optimal

heat exchanger network

• Optimises number of heat exchanger units with

minimum requirement of cold and hot utilities.
Some Basics

Q = m.Cp. (T1-T2)

Q = CP. (T1-T2)

CP = Heat capacity flow, Kw/deg c

Approach Temperature, Deg C

Hot end approach

20 deg c 80

100 60

Cold end approach

50 10 deg c

Minimum Approach – 10 deg c

Minimum Approach for Refinery Service HX = 15- 20 deg c

Example Problem
Example Problem
Design without Pinch Analysis
T-H Diagram for Hot Streams
Composite Curve for Hot Streams
Hot & Cold Composite Curves
Min Hot & Cold Utilities Required

Temp at which DT min is obtained is known as Pinch Point.

Above & Below Pinch
Heat is rejected
below pinch and
hence, a heat
source

Heat is required
above pinch and
hence, a heat sink

The Pinch divides the problem into Source and Sink

Effect of heat transfer
Heat input to heat source
increases cooling duty by
same amount

Heat removal
from Heat Sink
increases hot
utility by same
amount

Heat transfer across pinch increases both hot and cold utilities by the
same amount
Three Rules for Minimum Energy

No heat transfer across the pinch

No external cooling above pinch

No external heating below pinch

Some Basics

Thi Tho
DT2 DT1
Heat Exchanger
Tco Tci

Q = CPh . (Thi-Tho)
Thi-Tho = Q/CPh -------- EQ.1

Q = CPc . (Tco-Tci)
Tco-Tci = Q/CPc ----------- EQ2

Subtracting EQ2 from EQ1, we have,

(Thi-Tco) – (Tho-Tci) = Q (CPc-CPh)/CPc.CPh

DT1-DT2 = Q (CPc-CPh)/CPc.CPh
Hot Side of Pinch

For the hot side of the pinch, DT1 = DT min

DT1 = DT2 + Q. (CPc-CPh)/ CPc.CPh

For DT1 to be positive, we have, CPc ≥ CPh

Cold Side of Pinch

For the cold side of the pinch, DT2 = DT min

DT2 = DT1 - Q. (CPc-CPh)/ CPc.CPh

For DT2 to be positive, we have, CPh ≥ CPc

Design Above Pinch

For above pinch, pair the streams such that CPc ≥ CPh
Design Above Pinch
Design Below Pinch

For below pinch, pair the streams such that CPh ≥ CPc
