AR412S1: Module 01: Intro To Alternative Building Construction Systems

This document provides an introduction to alternative building construction systems. It outlines the course intended learning outcomes, which are to differentiate current building systems, discuss their implications for design, and analyze structural components. It also poses reflective questions about indigenous and contemporary materials and systems. The document then describes basic indigenous and contemporary materials and construction systems. It compares common and alternative systems based on material usage, labor, time, and cost. It concludes with an assignment to create a scaled structural model and shop drawings based on traditional joining techniques.

AR412S1 : Module 01

Intro to Alternative Building Construction Systems

Asst. Prof. JS de Asis, RLA, M.Arch, DURP
Course Intended Learning Outcomes

 Differentiate the current building systems

 Discuss the implications of different building systems on
architectural design
 Analyze the behavior of structural system components and
translate this behavior into conceptual sketches
 Draw the different building systems and its components as
it is to be represented in shop drawings
Points for Reflection
 What materials were available to be used for building
construction prior to invention of concrete?
 How were structures constructed then? How were the
materials joined?

 What materials are available now to be used for building

construction?
 What are contemporary building construction systems?
How are they constructed?
Indigenous Building Construction Systems and Materials

Support to Design
Minor Plate #1
 Objective: Before proceeding with alternative and/or advanced
building construction systems, establish first the understanding of
indigenous and basic contemporary construction systems

 Materials to bring for Studio Session:

 Round and Flat sticks of wood (or equivalent) that can
represent bamboo and/or lumber at a 1:20 scale
 Strings
 Cutting Mat and cutter
 Base (made from sturdy board) sized 20cm x 20cm
Minor Plate #1
 Form yourselves into groups of 3 members
 Create a study model at a scale of 1:20 with the following conditions:
 Model Size: base of 20cmx20cm; floor area of 15cmx15cm (ie. 3mx3m); height of 15cm (ie. 3m)
 Model Details and Conditions: Must be joined without glue – lashings OR hidden joints only; Must
have a loading platform (level surface) on top; Must be able to carry the representative dead load
shown in class without breaking or collapsing
 Create the shop drawings for the completed and approved model
 Other groups will try to recreate the model based on the shop drawings
 Timetable:
 08Nov: studio session: creation and testing of scaled model
 14Nov: drafting of shop drawings
 15Nov: testing of shop drawings
 Rubrics for Grading:
 Visual Quality of Scaled Model (10pts); Loading Capacity (10pts); Adherence to Instruction (15pts)
 Drafting Quality of Shop Drawing (10pts); Integrity of Instructions in the Shop Drawing (15 pts)
