Performance of The Diesel Engine Real 2

This document discusses how to test the performance and efficiency of a diesel engine. It involves the following steps: 1) Starting the properly lubricated diesel engine and noting the speed and fuel consumption rate at steady state. 2) Computing the mechanical efficiency using factors like indicated horsepower, indicated mean effective pressure, and brake horsepower. 3) Connecting the engine to a generator, restarting it, and observing the electric power generated for a given fuel amount to compute the efficiency.

 To understand how diesel power

plant work

 To conduct a test about

performance test and efficiency
test of a diesel engine
Four stroke diesel
engine
Tachometer
Generator
Watt meter
 1. Start the engine with the help of a
manual rotor after ensuring if machine is
properly lubricated or not.
2. After steady state is
reached, note down the
following:
 Speed of engine (rpm).
 The time taken for
50ml of fuel
consumption.
If dynamometer is
present, connect measured rpm
the engine to the measured load
dynamometer, start measured torque

the engine, observe

in the screens of
dynamometer.
3. Compute for the Mechanical Efficiency
of the diesel engine. Factors to consider
Indicated horsepower
Indicated mean effective pressure
Brake horsepower
Mechanical efficiency
• Constant speed
with variable
load
(AC Generator)

• Variable speed
with variable
load.
(Automobiles)
 The average pressure produced in
the combustion chamber during
the operating cycle.
I.P. = P.L.A.N/60

where I.P. is indicated power

P is indicated mean effective pressure
L is stroke length
A is the cylinder area.
N is the engine rpm (for 4 stroke it is N/2)
The total amount of power developed by an engine.

where, Pm = LM.E.P. in kg/cm2

L = Length of stroke in metres,
A = Piston areas in cm2,
N = Speed in R.P.M,
n = Number of cylinders,
k = 1 for two stroke engine and
k = 2 for four stroke engine.
The actual amount of power transferred to the propeller

where T = Torque in kg.m.

N = Speed in R.P.NT.
 The difference between the
Indicated horse power (I.H.P) and
Brake horse power (B.H.P) is called
frictional horse power (F.H.P)
F.H.P = I.H.P – B.H.P
4. After computation, connect the diesel engine
to the generator.
5. Start the engine again with 50 ml of fuel
while connected to the generator.
6. Observe power generated of diesel engine
that was converted into electricity for 50 ml
using a watt meter
7. Compute the efficiency using the indicated
horsepower and the electric power generated.
