Liquid-Liquid Extracti0N: Present By:-Guided By: - Roshan Ramdas Jadhav Prof. Raju Marag

Liquid-liquid extraction is a separation process that uses the differences in solubility of compounds across two immiscible liquid phases. It works by contacting a feed solution containing the desired solute with a solvent, allowing mass transfer and partitioning of the solute between the two liquid phases based on its distribution coefficient. Key parameters that affect liquid-liquid extraction include solvent selection, operating conditions, extractor type, and design criteria. It has applications in food, chemical, and other industries and advantages of ambient temperature operation and solvent recovery, though it can be time consuming.

Roshan Ramdas Jadhav Prof. Raju Marag
INDEX
• Introduction
• What is liquid-liquid extraction
• Principle
• Parameter of LLE
• Application
• Advantages and Limitation
• Conclusion
INTRODUCTION

EXTRACTION :-
• Extraction is a separation process consisting in the separation of substance from a solid or liquid
mixture
• The efficiency of a liquid-liquid extraction can be enhanced by adding one or more extractants to the
solvent phase
• The extractant interacts with component increasing the capacity of the solvent for
• To recover the solute from the extract phase the extractant-solute complex has to be degraded
LIQUID-LIQUID EXTRACTION :-

• It is a method to separate compound based on their relative solubilities in two different immiscible liquid.

• In liquid liquid extraction the extraction take place from one liquid medium to another.

• Feed contain the desired solute.

• It is come in contact with the solvent.

• Mass transfer takes place .

• The extract is the solvent rich solution content the extracted solute.

• The raffinate is the residual feed solution, may contain little solute.
PRINCIPLE :-

• It is a mass transfer and thermodynamic process and it works based on the partition or
distribution coefficient.
• Feed phase contains a component, which is to be removed
• Addition of a second phase (solvent phase) which is immiscible with feed phase but
component is soluble in both phases.
• After extraction the feed and solvent phases are called the raffinate (R) and extract (E) phases
PARAMETER OF LLE :-

• Solvent selection
• Operating conditions
• Mode of operation
• Extractor type
• Design criteria
APPLICATIONS:-

In Food Industry:-
1. Extraction of essential oil ,flavourings, ect.
2. Caffeine extraction from tea and coffee
Other Application:-
1. Removal of phenol from waste water .
2. Recovery and purification of acetic acid from aqueous streams.
3. Recovery of rate earth elements.
ADVANTAGES:-

• Heat sensitive products are processed at ambient or moderate temperatures.

• Suitable at wide range of temperature.
• Very large capacities are possible with a minimum of energy consumption.
• Recovery of solvent is possible.

LIMITATIONS:-
• Time consuming
• Required skilled labor
C0NCLUSION:-

• LLE is used when separation not possible by distillation.

• It is mass transfer and thermodynamic process.
• Selection solvent is very important parameter for LLE.
• This method is widely use in various industries.
• Though it is widely used , it has some limitation.
