• He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he
had gone eighty four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days
a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish the boy’s
parents had told him that the old man was now definitely and finally salao
[to be unlucky in fishing], which is the worst form of unlucky, and the boy
had gone at their orders in another boat which caught three good fish the
first week. It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with
his skiff empty.

Translate the following excerpt from Nineteen Eighty-four by George Orwell, following
the translation method you find most appropriate. Explain why you have opted for a
particular method.
• He could guess, however, that the book was much older than that.
• The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh
warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming
profusely and the grass was richly green.
• But in this village, where there were only about three hundred
people, the whole lottery took less than two hours, so it could
begin at ten o’clock in the morning and still be through in time to
allow the villagers to get home for noon dinner.
