Computer Assisted Instructions: Presented by Anha Fathima English

Computer assisted instruction (CAI) is an interactive instructional technique that uses a computer to present instructional material and monitor learning. CAI programs include drill and practice, simulations, instructional games, tutorials, discovery learning, and problem solving. CAI has advantages like one-on-one interaction, motivation, self-pacing, and multimedia aids for understanding concepts. However, CAI also has limitations like not replacing actual experience, software and hardware restrictions, and potentially mechanical learning.

English
Computer Assisted Instructions
Referred to as CAI
Term often used interchangeably with Computer
based instruction(CBI), Web based instruction(WBI),
Computer Assisted learning (CAL), Computer
enriched instruction(CEI), and Web based
training(WBT)
Computer Assisted Instruction(CAI)
Computer Assisted Instruction(CAI) is an interactive
instructional technique whereby a computer is used to
present the instructional material and monitor the
learning that takes place
What is CAI?
A self learning technique, usually offline or online,
involving interaction of the student with programmed
instructional materials.
CAI is an interactive instructional technique whereby
a computer is used present the instructional materials
and monitor the learning that takes place.
CAI uses a combination of text, graphics, sound and
video in enhancing the learning process
CAI Programs
Drill and practice
Simulation
Instructional game
Tutorial
Discovery
Problem Solving
Drill and Practice
Opportunity for the learner to practice material an
unlimited number of times.
Material being practice often presented before
training session.
Best method for material that requires repeated
practice to master (e.g.: multiplication tables)
Simulation
Provides a real life scenario with the material to be
learned being applied as it would in the real world.
Simulation provides safety of learning environment
Tutorial
Combines presentation of material with drill and
practice, games or a simulation to emphasize material
and assist in learning.
Most popular method of CAI.
Discovery
Provides the learner with an opportunity to draw his
own conclusions.
Presents learner with a wealth of material on a topic
and allows the learner to seek answers on his own.
Problem Solving
Problem solving presents material in such a way as
develop problem solving rationale.
Mainly used in children to develop problem solving
skills.
Advantages of CAI
One to one interaction
Great motivator
Freedom to experiment with different options
Instantaneous responds or immediate feedback to the
answers elicited
Self pacing
Privacy helps the shy and slow learner to learn
Self directed learning
Multimedia helps to understand difficult concepts
through multi sensory approach
Limitations of CAI
A poor substitute for actual experience
Software limitations
Restricted text displays
Learning becomes too mechanical
Hardware limitations
