Manufacture of Styrene

Styrene is produced through the Friedel-Craft alkylation of benzene with ethylene. Key steps involve drying benzene to remove water, reacting it with ethylene and ethyl chloride in the presence of aluminum chloride as a catalyst. The product polyethylbenzene is then dealkylated and purified through distillation to obtain styrene. Styrene's main uses are in producing synthetic rubber, plastic toys, and model kits.
