Organic Bioelectronics: Safa Riyaz

The document is a student paper on organic bioelectronics that provides an introduction to the field. It discusses how organic bioelectronics bridges electronics and medicine by using organic electronic materials that can interface with biological systems. A key organic material used is PEDOT, which when doped forms a better interface with tissue than inorganic materials. Applications discussed include using organic bioelectronics for neural interfaces, medical implants, and developing artificial sensory organs.

Bioelectronics In A Historical
Perspective
 Luigi Galvani (1780s) ; Applied static electricity
provided from an inorganic metal scalpel to the nerve
of detached frogs’ legs - made it move.
 From devices like pacemaker to wearables ,
bioelectronics is used everywhere
 Earlier, metal used for implant, as electrodes for
recording and stimulation.
Later: Flexible Inorganic CMOS circuits. [1]

Organic Bioelectronics

 Application of organic electronic materials to

the field of bioelectronics
 Organic materials (i.e. containing carbon) -
promising interface with biological systems.
 Electrical signals generated by carbon-
based electrically active materials are translated
into bio-signals and vice versa.[2]

State Of The Art Organic
Bioelectronic Material

 State of the art Material - conducting polymer

coatings.
 Advantages:
 Lowering of the electrical impedance,
 more efficient recording and stimulation
 Improved implant lifetime, and the ability to
deliver drugs
 Better Interfacing; Reduces inflammation [3]

 Polymer: poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)
 PEDOT – Relatively high conductivity and stability.
 Typically doped with either TOS or PSS.
 PEDOT: PSS – Available
as a solution.
Easy photolithography.
 PEDOT: TOS – Not solution;
Processable.
Easier to manipulate.

Applications Of Organic
Bioelectronics
(Contemporary Areas)

 Regulation of the physiology and processes of cells,

tissues, and organs in a chemically specific manner.
 Selectively sense, record, and monitor different signals
and physiological states in living organisms.[4]
 Electrodes and OECTs for Neural Interfaces

Organic Bioelectronics In The
Brain
 Development of neural prostheses capable of
recording and stimulating neuronal tissue
 Combats the inflammation caused by
implantation of silicon probes
 Conducting polymers were being used for
neural prosthetic applications(1980s). Later
researches proved doped PEDOT to have better
performance .

 Prof. George Malliaras (2017) devised an organic

electronic ion micro pump to enable the use of
drugs to get past the blood barrier and be delivered
directly into the brain thereby providing localized
chemotherapy.
 Applications lie in epileptic patients where surgery is
the only option. [6]

Implantable Organic
Bioelectronics for Pain Treatment
 Current drugs do not fully relieve pain due to
inefficient drug targeting.
 Experimental implant delivers GABA to spinal chord;
Relieves pain in rats
 Implant is an organic electronic ion pump to conduct

Key Points So Far

 Organic bioelectronics - Field concerned with

the application of biological materials and
processes in electronics, and the use of
electronic devices in living systems.
 The need of “organic” bioelectronics arose due
to the inflammation caused by inorganic or
metallic bioelectronic materials while
performing implants.

18
Contd

 These are devices made of conducting polymers

that form an interface with the biological
substances.
 The most common polymer used is PEDOT and
when doped with pss/tos, provides much better
efficiency.
 Potential Areas: Implants, E-tongue, E-nose,
Interfacing with the brain, etc.
