AMERICAN WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA)


• Signed into law in 1990, compares to the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
• Prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities
• In all areas including:
• Jobs
• Schools
• Transportation
• All public/private places open to the general public

• Guarantees equal opportunity and the same rights for those with disabilities and
those without.
• Consists of five titles relating to different areas of life.
TITLE II
• Prohibits discrimination against disability at state and local
level.
• Enforced by the U.S Department of Justice.
• Outlines necessary steps to avoid discrimination and the
demand for efficient communication with hearing, vision and
speech disabilities.
• Applies to public transportation regulated through the U.S
Department of Transportation.
• Requires public entities to provide fixed route services and follow
requirements for proper space layout for wheelchair access.
DEFINITION OF DISABILITY
• In order to be protected under the ADA one must be defined disabled by the law in
one of these ways :

• A person has a physical or mental condition preventing them from major life activities,
• Such as walking, talking, hearing, seeing, learning.

• A person has a history of disability, such as cancer.

• A person is believed to have a physical or mental impairment that is expected to be long time and not
considered minor.

DISABILITIES COVERED BY THE ADA
• Visual impairments. • Cerebral Palsy.

• Hearing or speech impairments.


• Epilepsy.
• Mental handicap.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY
• Is known as any device to help compensate for an individuals learning disability.
• It does not eliminate the difficulties but can help overcome one by focusing on
strengths rather than weaknesses.
• Can help a child whose struggling in school become more independent and improve
skills in these areas:
• Listening
• Math
• Organization and memory
• Reading and writing

• Audio books and computer software are examples.


WHY CLOSED CAPTIONING (SUBTITLING)
• The display of text across a screen in order to provide a transcript of the audio.
• Is required for the deaf to have access to.
• Helpful in situations where the background is noisy or sound is unable to be played.
• Provides translation of the audio in a language more easily understood for the
viewer.
“ALT” TAG
• Adds a text description to an image on a web page,
it should be used on all images.
• Gives an image meaning and purpose.

• It provides the user with a text equivalent of the


image, for visual users the ”ALT” tag appears when an <img src=”CampLogo.gif
image is broken or when disabled. alt=”Camp 2011 logo”>

• It is used for Microsoft Office to add a title and


description field.
BLINKING/FLASHING CONTENT
• Content that is used that flickers of flashes should be avoided because it can cause
seizures.

• It can be distracting for the users and those around them.

• If content that flashes must be used there are way to be able to test the content to
make sure its at a safe level.

• If content flickers more then 3 times per second then it is considered unsafe.
READ&WRITE TOOL ON CHROME
• The read&write tool provides a wide variety of powerful support tools.
• It provides support in:
• Documents
• Web pages
• Common files in google drive (google docs, pdf files, and ePub & Kes)

• Can help students with disabilities:


• Has text-to-speech option that allows students to hear the words across the screen.
• Uses pictures with text to help explain definitions.
• Has speech-to-text option to help with proofreading and studying.
CRXMOUSE
• CRXmouse is used to help speed up productivity with navigation shortcuts.
• Simple mouse gestures
• Super drag
• Wheel gestures
• Rocker gestures

• Gives customizable mouse gestures, keystrokes, and shortcuts.


• Allows those who need the help to have an easier time with accessibly and saves
time.
SIP-AND-PUFF TECHNOLOGY
• A technology support that sends signals to devices
through the method of inhaling and exhaling through a
tube or straw.
• Inhaling (sipping) exhaling (puffing)

• Most commonly used amongst those who do not have


function of their hands.
• Typically quadriplegics and wheel chair bound.

• Allows control over a wheelchair and computer devices.


• Disabled students can use this method to control a
mouse on a computer and have access to one like any
other student.
GHOTIT
• Is a program used to help assist those with dyslexia and dysgraphia and help them
overcome their difficulties.
• The main point is to help those read, write, and be able to correct texts in English on
their own.
• Provides proper teachings on spelling, grammar, and punctuation, while also helps
increase writing speed.
• Has assistance to read text out loud with dual highlighting along with reading texts
with images for those who need extra assistance.
