Seismic Micro Zonation Aap PHD

The document discusses seismic microzonation in India. It notes that the Ministry of Earth Science has allocated funding to develop seismic microzonation maps for 30 Indian cities using new technological procedures. Seismic microzonation involves subdividing land based on earthquake risk factors like geology, geophysics, and soil properties. It helps assess site-specific earthquake risk. The author attended a pre-bid meeting where they learned India is lacking in seismic microzonation maps. They chose this topic for their PhD thesis to help develop India's capabilities. Seismic microzonation has two parts: geophysical investigation to study subsurface conditions, and geotechnical investigation to analyze soil/rock properties.

Seismic Micro zonation

Why Needed ? Importance

 Ministry of Earth Science, India had  The entire land area of the country or
decided to float tender of the required zone is subdivided with
approximate estimated cost of INR 60 respect to potential seismic or
crores for completing seismic micro earthquake prone zone., by
zonation of 30 cities of India in year considering parameters alike
May 2017. Which first of its kind in
the country India. The Importance is
geological, geophysical
to revise all seismic design building characteristics, ground shaking,
codes as per the official liquefaction probability etc. Which is
announcement of Govt. of India. helpful in knowing site specific risk
accessement study.
Selection of Seismic Micro Zonation as Ph.D.
thesis Topic – Why & When

I can say that it is need of time, while Central

Government of India is spending these much of funding
through ministry of earth science in developing new
seismic micro zonation maps using new technological
procedures. I personally attended pre bid meeting
held on 19/6/2017 at Mausam bhavan Delhi. Though
Conversations of Various Scientists of Ministry of Earth
Science, I came to know we are very much lacking in
development of seismic micro zonation maps.
Selection of Seismic Micro Zonation as Ph.D.
thesis Topic – Why & When
As Per Recent scenario is concerned we are lacking in technologically
developed procedures for development of seismic micro zonation maps.
In India only Two cities had been completely developed seismic micro
zonation map i.e. Bombay, Delhi and Kolkata recently a year back. In
Remaining cities, work had been not started yet., In Sikkim it is in
progress. Some interesting observation of Pre bid Meeting is only 20
agencies took interest in submitting tender. And None of the agency was
able to qualify as a single bidder for geophysical and geotechnical
combined works to carry out in single hand except AIMIL ltd. Which is
remarkably less in country of 125 cores population. Which truly inspires
us to move forward from the status of under developed country to
developed nation.
Seismic Micro zonation
It can be divided in two parts
A.)Geophysical Investigation B.)Geotechnical Investigation
 Geophysical Exploration  Geotechnical Exploration
 It is a initial phase., where major  It is secondary phase., where
outcomes were derived. major outcomes related to
foundation/structural design are
 The major outcomes/objectives
derived.
includes micro tremors site,
Ambient H/V Noise survey, Major  The major out comes are
stratigraphy of Soil/Rock, engineering and index properties
Primary/Secondary and Rayleigh of soil/rock. Liquefaction
wave velocity determination of accessement through soil
the strata. Stratigraphy based on properties and site stratigraphy.
PS logging. Liquefaction Groundwater table monitoring.
Accessement based on PS Confirmation of geophysical
logging. And Multiple spectral parameters through various
analysis of surface waves. laboratory testing of soil and
rock. Vibration Analysis.
Broad Categorization of Seismic Micro zonation

 Geophysical Investigation:
 In order to collect the data in geophysical investigation, various new techniques
had been used. Here in Engineering Seismogram is used for data acquisition, in
which seismographs are taken through different stacks in different striking noise.
Then by the method of SASW/ MASW the wave length of primary and secondary
waves are differentiated. Based on which spectral development and velocity were
determined for these waves. Through which Shear Modulus G value can also be
estimated. Through Velocity and density of the layers., soil/rock stratigraphy can
also be estimated. Through Cross hole test (DHT ) methodology peak ground
acceleration (PGA) and response spectrum had been developed which is used for
seismic design/ earthquake safe design of buildings/structures. In the recent past
history it is found that no official micro tremor survey had been recorded for
Indian cities.
Geotechnical Investigation:

Geotechnical investigation had been carried out with the

conventional boring/ drilling operations. Disturbed /Undisturbed
samples were taken with Split spoon sampler test (N Value test).
Laboratory investigation carried out for confirmation of all
geophysical parameters. Alike G value had been cross checked
with resonant column test / cyclic tri axial testing of soil.
Depending upon the requirement DCPT/ SCPT will be done.
Liquefaction probability had been checked with fines content of
soil parameters or through SCPT or through ps logging. And Real
time Soil/ Rock Parameters had been developed in conjunction
with geophysical parameters.
Planning – Real Time Stimulation of
Ph.D. Programme
 I Propose to collect the real data for interpretation by asking
permission through SVNIT, Surat to Ministry of Earth Science, Delhi,
India. It is a process of data acquisition if granted by Ministry of Earth
Science.

 Use of the collected data with various available software for

stimulation, developing excel spread sheet programme for the same
purpose. Verification of various data and various properties of
soil/rock through geophysical/ geotechnical exploration. Checking of
Liquefaction probability., Its severness and its verification through
Primary/ Shear Wave logging also. These may take initial first year for
data acquisition.
Ph.D. Programme

 After completing of data acquisition, it is the time to find

complexity from the data itself or the point of interest or
mathematical problem as the research topic.

 Find our correlation study between the parameters alike the

SPT(N) Value test of the soil/ Rock with the Velocity of the
seismic waves of the same layer. Or Liquefaction probability for
soil with fine particles of soil parameters with the
Shear/Primary wave logging of Engineering seismogram.
Suggestions from Ph.D. Guide/ Ph.D.
review Committee
 All suggestions are appreciable and accepted during all
phase of ph.d. problem.

 Kindly provide your valuable suggestions on the same

topic or on the relevant questionnaire which is useful in
developing vulnerable thesis. Which is useful to the
society as a whole.
